Dave Brat has all the markings of a special breed of candidate: Those who get nominated, then do something to make their candidacies untenable, forcing the party to scramble for a last-minute replacement before the general election.
I could be wrong. I am going way out on a limb here. But let's just wait and see.

(44,173 posts)Ok, he's anti-immigrant, but so are a lot of Republicans in Republican districts and they do just fine.

And at the same time, pump some $$ into his Dem challenger's coffers. This is a possible flip.

(17,064 posts)Not used to the limelight. Has some rather extremist views. His victory seems due more to anti-Cantor fever more than voters embracing him. So a meltdown has a better chance than usual.

(2,959 posts)perhaps my opinion is a tad colored by my introduction to Calvin and Calvinism provided by my teachers at the Catholic High School I attended but Calvinism is one of the basis of the Protestant movement and antithesis of any Catholic beliefs I'm aware of.
I'd say this fact alone would indicate some sort of implosion in this guys future. one can hope.

(9,808 posts)Yes, it's... Theologically improbable, but stranger things have happened. I didn't see a ref for Calvinism, though.
(As an academic who enjoys watching tenure and turf wars, I'd really like to be observing this one... Econ vs sociology usually calls for popcorn, but I'd break out the lawn chairs and the cocktail franks for this.)
The internal dynamic should be VERY interesting. The president of Randolph Macon professes to be delighted by the situation, but the college is small, about 1200 students or so, therefore faculty size is small. . the academic soap opera potential should be high . Lawn chairs and cocktail franks for sure; a beer or two, also
I love it that the press has noted that Trammel gets better teaching evaluations than Brat.

How does a free market at all costs advocate end up in the public sector?
