AT&T tells the FCC that they cannot provide internet and video on their own

AT&T Inc's (T.N) acquisition of DirecTV (DTV.O) would offer consumers access to video in a variety of media and give the company scale to compete with larger cable competitors, AT&T told U.S. regulators on Wednesday.

AT&T, the No. 2 wireless carrier, outlined why its proposed $48.5 billion acquisition of the largest U.S. satellite TV provider would benefit consumers in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission, which will examine whether the merger is in the public interest.

"Each company cannot provide on its own what consumers increasingly demand: an integrated and efficient bundle of high-speed broadband and high-quality video from a single provider,” AT&T said in the filing.

A merger would allow customers to save on services through wireless, wireline and television bundles AT&T cannot provide because of its limited video footprint, the company said.

COMMENT: So I guess that whole U-verse product they peddle is just jury-rigged and can fail at any moment, right?

Its cheaper to buy/merge than build from scratch. It's also a hard sell to communities to rip up the streets to lay fiber. I'm in the borough of a larger town and FIOS ends three blocks down. Borough isn't having it.

ETA - they won big with iPhone - but they hurt themselves 7 years later . . .

6. It's my understanding the infastructure behind uverse is a big obstacle.

Until about a year ago, we were something like several hundred feet too far from a hub, and we could not get uverse even though for several years neighbors across the street could. I imagine infrastructure like that on a national scale is pretty daunting.

Comcast's service is awful so that sounds like a punchline, but AT&T was even worse.
