Before House Majority Leader Eric Cantor could tell his fellow Republicans that he was stepping down, Speaker of the House John Boehner began to cry Tuesday in the basement of the Capitol, as he praised his outgoing colleague at a caucus meeting behind closed doors, according to several members of Congress who were present.

(426 posts)Boehner cries about everything - except the deplorable way his party treats this country. Cry me a river and get out of congress.

(8,964 posts)In more ways than one. Upon grasping the news, "Thank God for that" thoughts race through Boehner's brain, and in Cantor's presence he is quickly overcome by joyful emotion knowing he is finally rid of this nemesis, until the next upstart comes along that is!

We're living through tough times that will be studied by future historians, and the GOP's strategy is "no."

(54,330 posts)And that is that a Louie Gohmert clone is probably going to take Cantor's place--not the most conducive sort to try and keep in line if you're a Republican Speaker of the House.
As a "by-the-way" side note, there is a very well-done crime series ("Tatort" in Germany that has teams of homicide cops from around Germany on a rotating basis. The ones in provincial Münster/Westfalen are a very working-class soccer fan homicide cop moved down from Hamburg and a snobby, aristocratic medical examiner who also happens to be the homicide cop's landlord. The snooty Medical Examiner, brilliantly played by Jan Josef Liefers (a former East German who is equally at home as a singer in a rock band in real life), is named Karl-Friedrich Boehner (correctly pronounced, for a change).

(8,964 posts)The good for Boehner: He can remove his knife-proof undergarment shield, for now anyway, since Cantor is out of the picture. Tears of joy.
The bad for Boehner: He might be vulnerable with his own voters, or could be out of a job if and when emboldened House Teabaggers decide to give him the slip. Tears of dread.
