to even get involved and try to help in that godforsaken part of the world is utterly useless . These are basically religious wars between two factions of ( peaceful? ) Islam .
We trained their troops to take car of these problems , and at the first sign of trouble , they drop all their ( US supplied ) weapons and run away en masse , leaving the weapons in the hand of the enemy . This is unacceptable !!! Its a total waste of our troops and resources .

(8,954 posts)Based on lies and cooked intelligence. The cost in human lives and treasure has been immeasurable, and Bush-Cheney's decision to push for intervention in Iraq coupled with our inevitable withdrawal has indeed destabilized the area, which should not come as any surprise as it had been predicted from day one. Yes, we could have stayed there indefinitely, surged until the cows come home, spent trillions more and add to the debt, put even more burden on military families, multi-deployed combat troops, disabled more veterans and put even more burden on the underfunded VA, pitted Iraqis against each other and killed thousands more civilians. The list goes on, all things that McCain contributed to and apparently wishes were still ongoing. What a sorry excuse for human DNA.

(802 posts)Because Iraq refused to go along with the Status Of Forces agreement that the US insists on before we leave any troops 'in country' anywhere. Has to do with who our troops are answerable to. Regardless, it's the same thing that would have happened under Bush - and the timeline and direction had already been set by the Bush Admin. Same comment however - fuck McCain...something I bet his wife quit doing decades ago.

(2,672 posts)John McCain and his buddies never saw a war they didn't like. What Iraq proved is that you cannot force democracy down people's throat by killing them. Iraq has centuries long hated and fighting among their religious groups and we totally ignored that. Not to mention the huge cost to the US in money and lives. I thing Obama has enough sense to not go there again.

(24,979 posts)He even publicly opposed it, though he was only a state senator and thus could not have voted for or against it. Makes for a significant if razor-thin difference between him and people like Clinton, Kerry and Biden. Except that all of these have been in his government. And he tried to extend the occupation. And he issued rhetorical justifications at the West Point speech (last year's, not this).
So, yeah, razor thin. Real enough. I'm sure McCain would have done a lot more than escalate the drone war and keep Guantanamo. So here's a cheer for the lesser warmaker.
saidsimplesimon

(24,979 posts)The Iraqi parliament, however, insisted on the terms as specified in the SOFA of 2008, which Bush had to finally negotiate given the situation that had developed (opposition at home as well as the mess in Iraq itself) and made a continuation infeasible.
Which is to say that, since I've criticized the Obama admin for trying to STAY in Iraq, we can now defend them against McCain's stupid accusations that they didn't.
Once the Iraqi parliament in 2011 shot down the idea of an extension (or of further immunity for the criminal acts of U.S. forces), Obama could hardly have ordered a second invasion at the time (doubtful even McCain would have tried that). So the terms of the SOFA were met.

(19,348 posts)In his book, Faith of Our Fathers, McCain writes that he had been upset that he had been limited to bombing military installations, roads, and power plants. He said such restrictions were "illogical" and "senseless."

Graham and fellow Republican hawk John McCain have been leading calls in Washington for a more robust response and have criticised Obama for not leaving a residual US force in Iraq to prevent such a crisis.
"We are facing a disaster here, not only in Iraq but Syria. Extremist groups now control more territory than at any time in history," said McCain.

infact, the rift between the group the Saudis(who are Sunni mostly) backed and the group the Iranians(Shiites mostly) backed caused their infighting after the soviets were defeated...
but hey, sometimes enemies join together to go after a mutual enemy.. and at the time, it was those gosh darn godless commies.

(3,596 posts)Bush and company negotiated a forces agreement with the Iraqi government under which we would pull out all of our troops. All Obama did was comply with what the Republicans had agreed to. He had no choice. The Iraqi government said we don't want you here.
So for this fucker to say they begged Obama to leave forces in country shows how stupid they are. Iraq wouldn't let us leave troops there you dumb shit.
And I for one now say...let Iraq burn. China is getting all the oil. Let the commies save Al-Maliki's butt. I don't want one penny of U.S. military to drop a bomb or fart toward Iraq. We are done. They didn't want us there.
Al-Maliki has created the conditions for this by refusing to include the Sunnis in governing the country. That resentment created a rift that the terrorists are exploiting.
As far as I am concerned if Shia and Sunni want to kill one another and turn the country into a flaming inferno. Who cares? Seriously....China will suffer because they will lose their oil source but I don't care about China either.
Time has come for us to say...well you pushed us out and now you lay in the bed you have made.
We need to protest if Obama starts giving military assistance to the corrupt Al-Maliki government.

That's the GOP way of life. It's time we quit being the world police. And it has to start now. We will NEVER be able to influence other countries. (233 posts)The U.S.Iraq Status of Forces Agreement was a status of forces agreement (SOFA) between Iraq and the United States, signed by President George W. Bush in 2008. It established that U.S. combat forces would withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, and all U.S. forces will be completely out of Iraq by December 31, 2011.
The pact required criminal charges for holding prisoners over 24 hours, and required a warrant for searches of homes and buildings that were not related to combat. U.S. contractors working for U.S. forces would have been subject to Iraqi criminal law, while contractors working for the State Department and other U.S. agencies would retain their immunity. If U.S. forces committed still undecided "major premeditated felonies" while off-duty and off-base, they would have been subjected to an undecided procedures laid out by a joint U.S.-Iraq committee if the U.S. certified the forces were off-duty.

(2,062 posts)I watched the video this morning and I have several problems, that were not addressed.
1. Did we really win this situation, as far as I see it, Maliki was never in charge of a stable government.
2. How can you assist an army, when you have been training them for 10 years, and at the first tough go of it, they throw down their weapons and run.
3. Sunni and Shia have been battling for thousands of years, how does McCain think the US will stop that, especially when the new Iraq government counted out the shiites.
4. Why, either from the panel or McCain was there ZERO mention of the failed pact between US and Iraq about putting stabilizing troops in the country. remember earlier this year, Iraq rejected a pact to keep troops in there.
5. Does McCain really think the American people will stomach more US troop death in this region?
McCain is attempting to simply muckrake, because of his failed election bid. He has never been the same since he lost, introduced the Sarah Palin to the world, or even was released from Viet Cong from prisoner release/swap.....teaming with Graham is another losing point, both need to retire.....ASAP
