NSFW doesn't always mean "work"

A lot of the complaints coming about the whole lack of a NSFW tag in a recent post is related to the fact that "you people shouldn't be looking at DU at work." Which has resulted in some good posts about peoples varied workplace experiences and rules.

But it's also worth remembering that while "NSFW" does mean "not safe for work", it's also the tag used for people that are not in work but in places where you may not want to have that visible on your screen.

Sitting at a cafe on your laptop.

Visiting a public library with who knows running around behind you.

A computer or laptop or tablet in your living room where others are going about.

It's just basic common courtesy.

It's not because we're afraid of nipples. Goodness no. It's because we're considerate of others.

1. It's mildly amusing that in a thread where people are complaining about people being judgmental

about not wanting to see a nipple, they are happily judgmental about what you do at work.

There could be parents, kids, partners.... dogs, cats.

No really, it is a good point. We should be careful at all times.

It's just basic common courtesy.

It's not because we're afraid of nipples. Goodness no. It's because we're considerate of others.

This is exactly right.

I have witnessed first hand, people wanting to use questionable (often in their own minds) computer access to harm someone. It's not about controlling anyone... it's about protecting them from situations that can, and will often, get out of hand. Even an innocent picture of a mother breastfeeding her baby could be come a harassment suit. Which is a horrible thing to think we would stoop to, but some people will.

Thanks Blue_Adept for posting this.

The other thing some seem to be missing is the original thread appeared to be about guns, that's what I thought it was, so I didn't click on it. It was a "bait and switch" of sorts, so someone who was thinking s/he was going to read a thread on why that poster was a supporter of open carry was in for a piss-poor analogy that involved what many consider nudity. Personally, I don't give a shit.

who are afraid of nipples."
To me, your claim that breastfeeding is a shameful act that must be hidden from others is pretty offensive material.

Should I be considerate of their delicate sensibilities too?

How about if I'm watching a youtube of Folk Uke playing one of their songs?

Sure, maybe there isn't anything inherently NSFW for a breastfeeding picture to you, but not everyone has the luxury of being surrounded by likeminded folks. And that can create some rather awkward situations.

Most friends and family have unrestricted internet access, if not through their self-censored workplaces, then by their own internet connections.

*But I won't post an image of the 'don't tread on me' (as I'm killing you) flag*

"I feel like this is kind of blaming the victim to even blame the shooters here..."

"I will not let government tell me what to do and yes, we are going with the aim of overthrowing the government..."

We've got Beck calling having 'empathy' a Nazi scheme and Jones, an avid promoter of open carry in Texas, blaming feminists for asking for a bit more civility in public.

The right wing believes that whatever you do is okay if it's against 'evil,' and that being considerate and tolerant is for liberal losers. That mindset is spreading to all realms.
