http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/06/iran-vows-combat-terrorism-iraq-2014612113247864941.htmlI'd say the Iranian occupation of the south of Iraq will begin soon.
Get ready for a complete rewrite of the borders in the ME.

(3,639 posts)doubt they want to end up in a long protracted war like the 8 year war they had with Iraq while reagan fanned the flames.
If it is limited, they might do something, but I don't see them amassing a large number of troops

(60,010 posts)Wonder how the ME feels about that?
It makes more sense for Iran to discuss Iraq's needs with Iraq....Our foreign policy compleely ignored the importance of religious diversion and unity in those countries. But both have a Shia majority.
It was a given that soon as we left, the void would be filled with factions wanting a non-puppet head of state.
but...sigh...the US does not want Iran's friend Russia nosing about more ME territory., so I guess some outrage will be created, something that we are not immune to after all these years.

(25,183 posts)what the ME feels by seeing the whole damned place go into all-out war, because we've left the parties to sort it out themselves. Surely, dividing an artificially created country into independent sectors by predominant ethnicities is no worse than holding together warring factions with an iron boot at their throats.
Seems that the National Journal agrees with me:

(36,744 posts)It will look very different after this war, unless peace somehow is achieved.

(25,183 posts)at a negotiation table is at least as good as peace achieved through defeating an enemy on the battlefield.

(2,345 posts)Definitely time to log out of here again. I really don't have time to one up internet pseudonyms.
I wasn't seeing a lot of written news coverage, and I was kind of hoping to see some adult discussion about Iran coming to Iraq's aid...
My bad!
Snark on!

(11,541 posts)It was just surprising for me to see because 10 years ago, hundreds of how-much-well-deserved rants like this one were common on a daily basis.
Take it easy. No problem.
We just want the President to tell the rw warmongers to go eff themselves this time.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
"Nitwit"? Be civil please. No reason to call someone a "nitwit". The point should be argued. Please hide.

(7,208 posts)I remember (mid 70's) looking at an atlas when I was a kid. I always wondered why the borders of Jordan, Iraq, Syria etc. seemed to be randomly placed straight lines. I didn't learn until Operation Desert Storm that the borders were the carved up remnants of the Ottoman Empire designed for easier domination by European colonial powers.
I don't mean to sound callous when I say "let 'em go at it"'. I fear this thing is going to be a giant meat grinder and feel sorry for the people who's lives and communities will be destroyed in the process. However, the borders as they are currently configured only invite conflict and chaos.
The real party begins when someone attacks Israel or the Saudi Kingdom collapses. All in time for the 100th anniversary of WWI. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

(36,744 posts)...but a regional ME war will definitely snowball. The Chinese now import more oil from that region than we do.

(89,239 posts)nothing to do with the United States.
the current situation seems like something that would very likely have happened if we had not gotten involved and if they had been allowed to have their own Arab Spring.
but the thing is that because we did get involved we can't treat it as Syria. we still kind of owe them something. humanitarian support for sure.

(7,208 posts)This is a 1,000 year old shit storm. The Bush Administration just blundered to reawaken the beast. You would think at least someone in his cabinet had read a history book, but apparently such was not the case.
