doubt they want to end up in a long protracted war like the 8 year war they had with Iraq while reagan fanned the flames.

If it is limited, they might do something, but I don't see them amassing a large number of troops

Wonder how the ME feels about that?

It makes more sense for Iran to discuss Iraq's needs with Iraq....Our foreign policy compleely ignored the importance of religious diversion and unity in those countries. But both have a Shia majority.

It was a given that soon as we left, the void would be filled with factions wanting a non-puppet head of state.

but...sigh...the US does not want Iran's friend Russia nosing about more ME territory., so I guess some outrage will be created, something that we are not immune to after all these years.

what the ME feels by seeing the whole damned place go into all-out war, because we've left the parties to sort it out themselves. Surely, dividing an artificially created country into independent sectors by predominant ethnicities is no worse than holding together warring factions with an iron boot at their throats.

Seems that the National Journal agrees with me:

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

"Nitwit"? Be civil please. No reason to call someone a "nitwit". The point should be argued. Please hide.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Jun 12, 2014, 07:10 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: She's calling George W. Bush a nitwit. This is perfectly ok. Quit alerting for stupid reasons.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The post is a completely unwarranted personal attack.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Unprovoked personal attack in otherwise civil thread
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I don't understand the need to be such a prat. This comment adds nothing to the discussion but acrimony. Hide it.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: An obvious referral to W and I couldn't agree more.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Apparently the alerter didn't grasp what the poster meant! Sad.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Thu Jun 12, 2014, 08:43 PM
Jun 2014

I remember (mid 70's) looking at an atlas when I was a kid. I always wondered why the borders of Jordan, Iraq, Syria etc. seemed to be randomly placed straight lines. I didn't learn until Operation Desert Storm that the borders were the carved up remnants of the Ottoman Empire designed for easier domination by European colonial powers.

I don't mean to sound callous when I say "let 'em go at it"'. I fear this thing is going to be a giant meat grinder and feel sorry for the people who's lives and communities will be destroyed in the process. However, the borders as they are currently configured only invite conflict and chaos.

The real party begins when someone attacks Israel or the Saudi Kingdom collapses. All in time for the 100th anniversary of WWI. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

nothing to do with the United States.

the current situation seems like something that would very likely have happened if we had not gotten involved and if they had been allowed to have their own Arab Spring.

but the thing is that because we did get involved we can't treat it as Syria. we still kind of owe them something. humanitarian support for sure.
