A College Rape Survivor Responds To George Will's "Coveted Status" Remarks

*******This post contains extensive discussion of the traumatic stress experienced by many survivors of sexual abuse. Reader discretion is advised.******************

I won't be going into detail about my rape and multiple instances of sexual assault throughout my life. It's vital to discuss how rhetoric like Will's has been used for years to silence those of us who weren't allowed to choose all of our sexual partners -- and the severity of the consequences of the widespread assault that right-wing media are mocking.

According to a White House report, nearly 22 million women and 1.6 million men have been raped. To put it another way: every 2 minutes (probably less time than it will take for you to read this post) an American is sexually assaulted. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) states that two-thirds of rapes were committed by people that the victim knew, and 97% of rapists won't ever see the inside of a jail cell (increasing the chance that they'll do it again).

These are the realities that many sexual assault survivors experience. And while we can take medication or go to therapy, our experiences and memories will never leave most of us. Some people overcome this, and grow stronger as a result. But others lose complete hope, blocking out all memories so they can't remember things that occur outside of a day or even a few hours, damning themselves to a life of solitude, or even taking their own lives.

I have some words for George Will and others who argue that sexual assault survivors "make victimhood a coveted status": Just stop. We've heard language like yours our whole lives that downplays or discounts our pain, either from ourselves, or close family members and friends that are supposed to love and support us. Your language enforces the prisons that we build for ourselves, locked in a cage of guilt, depression, anxiety and self-loathing. But as more and more survivors come forward because we realize how many other people share their pain and refuse to let it overpower us, we're learning that your voice means nothing against the strength we have amassed after undergoing such horrific experiences. Your refusal to accept or acknowledge the reality of sexual assault doesn't make our experiences any less real.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable crap that Will meant to spark this discussion, which we need to have, out of the deep well of pain, humiliation, self-recrimination and guilt rape survivors experience. But, Hiatt cautions us, critics of Will have to watch what they say and how they characterize Will's insensitive prose, lest they be branded Not Serious.

What he is, is articulate. These two traits don't have to go hand-in-hand, and are often mistaken for each other.

I read his columns for years. Not for his political opinions, which I often found to be silly if not flat-out wrong, but because I have worked as a journalist and have a fascination with the English language, which he wields proficiently.

George Will has an excellent command of the, both, English language and persuasive argumentation. His affected use of big words, complex sentences and, often disconnected, obscure historical anecdotes, along with his Bow-tied, glasses-wearing, and professorial tweed coat, gives him the appearance of being "right."

He is a prime example of the classic sociological/psychological experiment where subjects are subjected to two "subject matter expert Professors", one the speaks to a topic, and the other says a lot of jibberish and the subjects are asked to judgment which "Professor" was "smarter"/had the more persuasive argument.

And yes in his tone deaf words, he may or may not believe what he says. However he is clueless.

To put it another way: every 2 minutes (probably less time than it will take for you to read this post) an American is sexually assaulted.

A rape every 2 minutes. That does not even touch the beatings, the verbal abuse and the spirit of a woman that is destroyed, sometimes beyond salvation. So George can take his sanctimonious drivel and his stupid bow tie and stuff it. He can not and will not ever know what women go through. It is the same thing over and over. With women and AA, they know better. No they do not, they never will.

Women have always been "accused" by men such as him for not getting over the assault, the rape, the abuse, the lower pay, etc.... Just the final line of misogyny, the last rebuke of dehumanization these creeps spin out trying to keep the reality from coming to light. Hurry up and gasp your last breath Mr Wills, if your contribution is to invalidate the suffering of millions. Who would heal ever so much faster without the lies and denial our society inbreeds.

that argue, while racism exists, it is over-inflated and a tool to shut down arguments. They admit that it exists ... they just can't seem to find either, unless there is a battered and bruised, prudently dressed (before the clothes were ripped of), non-drinking woman, or the N-word is spoken (but not in anger).

It really blows George Wills out of the water, and the tweets are such acts of bravery from women who speak out. It was started by the courageous Wagatwe Wanjuki, (@wagatwe) who was thrown out of Tufts University when she reported her rape. Trigger warnings apply, of course.
