Catholic Bishops Vote to Double Down on Culture War

Don't you just love the smell of change in the morning? Except when it stinks, that is.

Catholic Bishops Vote to Double Down on Culture War
Post by Patricia Miller

The U.S. Catholic Bishops' vote to maintain their politically aggressive Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty for another three years signals that despite the warnings of Pope Francis to tone down the culture war stuff, the bishops are fully invested in their crusade against same-sex marriage and universal access to birth control.

And it’s no wonder, given the people they’re listening to for advice. On Thursday, the bishops will hear presentations on marriage from Helen Alvare, a former staffer and leading far-right proponent of the “contraceptive mentality” and its supposed dangers to women and marriage, and W. Bradford Wilcox, author of a controversial Washington Post op-ed which advised women to get married already so they wouldn’t get beaten or raped by their boyfriends (original headline: “One way to end violence against women? Stop taking lovers and get married”).

It’s the dream team of socially regressive conservative tripe on why marriage is good for everyone—except gay people, for whom it is very, very bad—and contraception is evil, largely because it allows women to avoid marrying their baby daddies.

The bishops are now fully invested in a long-term campaign to oppose same-sex marriage. In fact, Archbishop William Lori, who heads the religious liberty committee, likened it to the bishops’ anti-abortion efforts. “It’s a major task on a generational scale,” he told the conference....

Catholic Archbishop: Change Constitution to Ban Same-Sex Marriage
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is scheduled to speak at a NOM march next week.
BY Michael O'Loughlin
June 12 2014

The man appointed by U.S. Catholic bishops to fight the church’s battle against marriage equality called Wednesday for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Speaking in New Orleans at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ summer meeting, San Francisco’s Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone rejected calls from some priests to move on from the issue and instead seemed to double down.

In his report to his fellow bishops, Cordileone, head of the bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, said the nation finds itself at a “critical point,” according to the National Catholic Reporter.

“An amendment to the U.S. Constitution is the only remedy in law against judicial activism,” he said...

Lawmakers Urge SF Catholic Bishop Not To Speak At NOM’s March For Marriage Rally

So much for the live-and-let-live attitude attributed to Pope Francis. Salvatore J. Cordileone, the Archbishop of the very gay San Francisco, plans to be a headline speaker at a national anti-marriage rally sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and the Family Research Council, prompting 80 lawmakers, and faith and community leaders to send him a letter urging him not to go.

“NOM has a long and well-documented history of publishing material that connects homosexuality with pedophilia and incest and falsely suggests that gays and lesbians are trying to’“inculcate children,’” the letter notes. “Likewise, the Family Research Council, which is co-sponsoring the event, has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of their vitriolic rhetoric.”

Among those signing the letter are San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. As mayor of San Francisco, Newsom starting issuing marriage certificates, leading to a favorable court ruling and then the Prop 8 campaign.

Even by the hierarchy’s standards, Cordileone is a hardliner on marriage equality. He was a leading proponent of Prop 8, and prior to the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality last year he proclaimed that it “dehumanizes” people. (Yes, giving people their rights will do that every time.)

Note: The article below is being included here because Ludovine Rochere, along with Archbishop Cordileone, Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, will be among the guest speakers at the NOM "March for Marriage" in Washington. Rochere is also an anti-choice activist and opposes in-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination and surrogacy.

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis Holds Private Mass With President Of Viciously Anti-Gay Manif Pour Tous

Pope Francis today held a private mass with Ludovine Rochere, the president of France's viciously anti-gay Manif Pour Tous, which held many massive and often violent rallies during the battle for same-sex marriage. From the right wing newspaper Le Figaro (via Google Translate):

The Pope "listened very carefully," according to the president of Manif Pour Tous, Ludovine Rochere, in a statement she made on Thursday morning in Sainte Marthe in Rome, where she was invited to participate in a private Mass with the Pope. "I was placed in the middle of the meeting," said Rochère, "but someone picked me before the start of the Mass, wondering if I was the president of the Manif Pour Tous, to put me at the forefront of the faithful along the aisle, just behind the priests."

This protocol detail is not unimportant. Especially during this Mass, where only thirty people are allowed. It clearly means that the Pope wanted to honor this non-denominational movement since he did invite its principle representative.

After Mass, Pope Francis gave an interview to Rochère, who told him that she was there "on behalf of hundreds of thousands of French who mobilized against the law for gay marriage." She also told him that they were currently advocating on the issue of medically assisted procreation (MAP) and surrogacy. Although the language barrier did not favor the exchange that lasted about five minutes (the Pope understands but does not speak French), he promised that he "would consider" the best way to send a message to the French....

Challenge their tax-exemptions. Flood them with sexual abuse lawsuits. When they hide assets, charge them with fraud and contempt. Wouldn't hurt to drop the word "RICO" into press releases now and then. Fuck the bishops, if they want war give them one. They'll shit their mitres and shut up real quick.
