Yesterday was a strange day here in GD. It seems that those who don't work in office jobs have very extreme notions of what it must be like, and it sounds like a grim nightmare. Those fascist overlords are just cracking the whip down at the plantation while plotting to destroy the world for profit, I guess. No exceptions for nonprofits or government or associations or small businesses or self-employed.
I'll choose not to heap too much snarky self righteous judgment down upon you. But I am curious about those who don't work in office jobs. It seems like a lot of DUers manage to live pretty well and still have lots of free time to enjoy life. So how did you do it? How did you achieve your liberal dream life?
Are you all independently wealthy? Are you hippies living in intentional communities? I suppose some of you may be writers or artists or something bohemian. Or do you have more of a "Breaking Bad" situation? You can't all be retirees and/or students.
The most obnoxious anti-office people on facebook are generally the ones involved in pyramid selling like Amway. They're not fooling anyone, I hope.
And of course a beautiful baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph for all of you!
PS: I always thought the plural of Jesus was Jesuses, not Jesi.

(45,432 posts)During particularly bad snow days on my last project we may have our team work from home and do conference calls and webmeetings throughout the day. Most of the time I'm on various customer sites and have to follow their policies.
I work for an Indian company and once or twice a week ( when I'm not actually in India, anyway) I get up on the early side, start my conference calls between 5:00 and 6:00 am and work at home until 2:00 or so. I usually don't go into the office on those days and I'll knock off by 4:00.
Today is one of those days
Oh and I only check DU on my personal, non company owned iPad or laptop. I don't think anyone would care, but I try hard not to mix business and personal stuff.

(9,463 posts)I didn't want to be climbing around on buildings, sometimes 20-30 stories up, after I turned 50, which happens in a couple of months. So, I taught myself how to design, build, and manage websites and was working for a competitor of the company I work for now when I got this job. The pay was competitive with my construction job and has improved substantially since I started part-time seven years ago. Now that it pays better than my union job did, I'm working from home full-time for a few years now.

(2,674 posts)She lost her full-time job about 2 1/2 years ago, she is barely scrapping by doing freelance work. My husband and I are retired and have to help her out with her house payment every month, don't want her to lose her home. We work from home, I have several web sites which bring in a decent income to go with our retirement, but I will soon be 75 and working the web sites and shipping all the time is getting old. Couldn't run the sites without my 77 year old husband helping. Now we want to cut back and play a little more, but worry about our daughter.
She has applied for a lot of jobs, but she is over 50 and no one wants to hire her. Shows what a degree in fine art will do for you. I studied accounting in college, ended up in the software business, but kept going back to school to keep on top of all the computer changes, then learned web design when I was in my late 50's, back when you had to had to hand code your html. Now I use Dreamweaver, but still breakout and hand code a lot. Leaning this skill paid off for us. We have helped put two grandkids through college, too.
We have thought about her moving in with us, since our home is paid for, but I don't really want this, it will be a last resort.

(25,816 posts)I bought 40 acres in '78, built my own house, raised 4 kids and still work when I can find it. Lots of chores to do around here, gardening, maintenance, repairs. I made a crack about NSFW the other day. I guess I offended a few people. In my job,
you either worked or you walked. Of course, you can't browse on a computer when you're doing construction. I remember one job on the local army base- we were building three ramadas to be used as smoking areas for the civil servants in the adjacent building. I couldn't believe how often the same four or five people would come outside to smoke. Civil servants paid by my taxes to goof off. I guess stuff like that just irritates me. Truthfully, I busted my ass for years, and took some pride that I was the fastest and best mason around. Before I got my masonry license and later my general license, I was a foreman on some large projects.
My place is paid off, I'm on SS.

tapermaker
(244 posts)Tapermaker is another name for a split bamboo fly rod maker as well as restorationist. In my late thirties I noticed that my job in construction was anything but a liberal slackers dream . It was damn hard work .I needed to find something else. My love of fishing (especially flyfishing) led to my interest in old bamboo rods. It soon became a hobby then obsession. I found a local rod builder through a bartering club in 1999 .I traded him the installation of his new windows for a intense training on all things having to do with bamboo rod building. The following year I took a class at bellingers inc. where I learned more about the milling machine I purchased from them to start my business. After offering my rods to the general public through a blog meant for old cane rod enthusiast (classicflyrodforum )and word of mouth via happy customers, I found work to be steady enough that I quit my job in construction in 2006. Since then , I have enjoyed myself thoroughly doing something I love, at my own pace.I spend about 30 hrs a week in my shop . the rest of the time I watch msnbc, young turks, I listen to Stephanie.I spend about 20 hrs on the computer. My dog Dixie gets a lot of attention. I plan on doing this as long as possible, The constant attention to taper design is very good mental stimulus .I think it will keep my brain functioning at a high level.I am currently in my mid fifties .Obama care has helped me have insurance for the first time in my adult life.I plan on taking my social security as late as possible. this should allow me a choice to slow down around 70 yrs old If I wish to. . My website is here www.stonerodco.com .If you have an old rod of grandpa`s you want to get fixed or want a new addition to your collection give me a call

My weekly schedule:
Saturday: report at 3:30 pm, go home sometime between 1 am and 2 am. We print essentially one newspaper this day: we do four different covers, but the Sports, Business, Lifestyles, Comics and Classifieds are the same on all four.
Sunday: report at 3:00 pm, go home between 12:30 and 1:00. We have two papers to print today, plus a couple "shopper" publications that are weekly reprints of the classifieds section. I clean a plate processor on Sunday, which is why I go in so early.
Monday: report at 2:00 pm, go home between 1:30 and 2:30. We print a four-section, a three-section and a two-section daily, and two single-section weeklies.
Tuesday: report at 1:00 pm, go home between 2:30 and 4:00. We print a five-section, a four-section and a two-section daily, two two-section weeklies and a one-section weekly.
I also do the daily Internet edition of the paper. That can take up to two hours, depending on how big the paper is.
