Leading to a much more bloodthirsty Middle Eastern conflict than imaginable. Perhaps even nuclear war.

Leading to a much more bloodthirsty Middle Eastern conflict than imaginable. Perhaps even nuclear war, which makes that a damned if you do and damned if you don't scenario.

So how many people are we willing to kill, our own and others? What's the price we are willing to pay, in blood and taxes? I don't see this as critical to our existence as a nation. Iraq goes to hell in a hand basket and we will still be here. Since it isn't a fight for our very existence, what reason would we use to go to war?

We made the situation there worse. Should we do something about it? I understand the point of view of those who say 'No'.

But it's hard to sit back and watch them slaughter themselves, too. Because no matter how horrible we screwed up that country, they are much more horrible to each other. We can ignore them, sure. But should we if there is the possibility of helping?

"Stay out of my territory or I'll PECK YOUR GODDAMNED EYES OUT!"

We live in the world created by that first war. How many more echo's of that first war will we hear? And if we are going to intervene, shouldn't we come up with a consistent policy about that other than citing "National Security."

It appears to me that we set up an inherently insecure and unstable government. That government is now being swept aside by another group. No one has answered to my satisfaction what we get form this, how does it really help the people of Iraq, or what type of government do the people of Iraq want?

If they want to fight with each other, let them have at it. This is a religious war and we need to stay out of it.

I remember (mid 70's) looking at an atlas when I was a kid. I always wondered why the borders of Jordan, Iraq, Syria etc. seemed to be randomly placed straight lines. I didn't learn until Operation Desert Storm that the borders were the carved up remnants of the Ottoman Empire designed for easier domination by European colonial powers.

I don't mean to sound callous when I say "let 'em go at it"'. I fear this thing is going to be a giant meat grinder and feel sorry for the people who's lives and communities will be destroyed in the process. However, the borders as they are currently configured only invite conflict and chaos.

The real party begins when someone attacks Israel or the Saudi Kingdom collapses. All in time for the 100th anniversary of WWI. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
