Shiites in the south under Iranian influence, Kurds near the Turkish border, and Sunnis in the north and northwest. But maybe he should have gone further and proposed the complete breakup of the country back in 2008 followed by the U.S. exit. It's breaking up anyway; Kurds are now in control in Tikrit and the Iranians are moving in in the east and south. I think the days of this mess of Iraq as a country might be numbered. I remembered how Biden was attacked by the right and a guy like Dan Senor for his proposal.

In 2007, McCain called Biden's plan 'totally unrealistic" and in the same interview said that Al Maliki "gets it" after he had a sit-down dinner with him and Lindsey Graham. Well, the "totally unrealistic" plan is becoming a de facto reality.

It's so painful to watch, so many good people there facing bombings and now another war.

However, the region had a thriving civilization when Europeans were painting themselves blue and clubbing each other to death. Eventually, once they've sorted themselves out, they can again.

The partition of the country might be both necessary and overdue. The British were stupid when they drew borders that didn't reflect tribal and sectarian reality. There was never much of a national identity.

It's sad. It was also predictable. Every single death has to be hung around the PNAC necks.
