"Girl scarred by pit bull attack asked to leave restaurant" (KFC in Jackson MS)

This sickening atrocity happened about 30 miles from me earlier today....

http://www.wapt.com/news/central-mississippi/girl-scarred-by-pit-bull-attack-reportedly-asked-to-leave-restaurant/26477388#!YD6BC

JACKSON, Miss. —A 3-year-old girl who was attacked by pit bulls in April was asked to leave a Jackson restaurant because her scars scared customers, the girl's grandmother told 16 WAPT News.

"Does this face look scary to you?" accompanied a picture of Victoria Wilcher on the Facebook page Victoria's Victories, which documents the child's recovery from the attack at her grandfather's home in Simpson County. Authorities said one of Donald Mullins' dogs ripped open the back door and jumped on the girl. Two other dogs dragged her into the back yard and began mauling her, investigators said.

"The right side of her face is paralyzed. She's got a lot of surgeries to go through and she won't even look in the mirror anymore," said Victoria's grandmother, Kelly Mullins. "When we go to a store, she doesn't even want to get out (of the car). She's 3 years old and she's embarrassed about what she looks like. She's embarrassed and I hate it because she shouldn't be. It ain't her fault."

Victoria hadn't felt that way until last week when she was turned away from a KFC in Jackson, Mullins said.

Her insurance company is refusing to pay for her feeding tube and formula -- $500 a month. How can this be!

Victoria's Story for all the new supporters to the page:

In April 2014 while visiting with her grandfather Victoria was the victim of a pit bull attack. The 3 dogs involved where put down immediately. Victoria had bites all over her body but the most damage was to her sweet little face. She had a broken upper and lower jaw, broken nose, cheek bones and right eye socket. She lost her right eye completely and the ability to move the right side of her face. They have reconstructed her bottom jaw but cant do anymore surgeries until she grows new bone in her face due to the fact that the broken pieces are to small to piece together. She is currently at home with a feeding tube, but doing amazing. She has already graduated from physical therapy but continues to see a speech and swallow therapist weekly. Victoria's family is struggling financially due to the fact that the insurance company is refusing to pay for many of her medicines and anything to do with her feeding tube or formula which is $550 a month. Please continue to pray for Victoria and for God to make a way financially. Thanks for the support! Click to Donate: http://www.gofundme.com/8q8yww #gofundme

TO treat a 3 year old that way is criminal in my book. She doesn't even understand all the dynamics involved, but she does understand being ostracized and that just infuriates me to no end! 3 year olds should be happy and playing with toys and friends...NOT worrying about how they look to the outside world.

and found this:

I understand the knee-jerk reaction many are expressing to the unfortunate events that happened in one of the stores here. I too initially thought "boycott KFC." But then I remembered something- since I'm a paramedic. If you look at the entrance to the new Pediatric Emergency Room at UMMC - where this little girl was certainly treated - it reads "Colonel Harland Sanders" on the outside. Her life-saving treatment was partly made possible by a very generous donation from Colonel Sanders family to construct the new Peds ER. We all have black sheep in our family and hope others don't judge us by their actions. My hopes are that KFC Corporate will stick to their word and investigate and issue corrective action along with a public statement of the resolution so we all know they took care of things.

I don't think you can hold this against the entire company, just because one idiot employee made a stupid decision.

According to the FB page, they are having a lot of problems meeting medical needs due to problems with the insurance company. I wouldn't be at all surprised if KFC stepped in and helped with those expenses.

I think Popeyes beats them by a longshot. I have probably had KFC 4 times in my life with the last 3 either being outvoted by a group or because I was very hungry and there were few options.

This appears I to be a case of a cold hearted and stupid manager or assistant mgr. making a very bad judgement call. The owner of this location is going to be very upset about this negative publicity. The person who kicked her out might be looking for a new job or demotion.

"KFC launched an investigation as soon as we were made aware of this report. We take this very seriously, as we have zero tolerance for any kind of hurtful or disrespectful actions toward our guests. Our investigation is ongoing, but we have been in touch with the family and are committed to doing something appropriate for this beautiful little girl and her family. We will also work with the franchisee to take appropriate action at the restaurant once the specifics of the incident are determined," said KFC spokesman Rick Maynard.

As for that local restaurant and the people involved they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves -

"I took her to the doctor and I went to KFC. I ordered a large sweet tea and her some mashed potatoes and gravy because she was hungry. She was on a feeding tube at the time, but I figured she could just swallow (the potatoes)," Mullins said. "They just told us, they said, 'We have to ask you to leave because her face is disrupting our customers.' (Victoria) understood exactly what they said."

those people that were "disrupted" are truly the ugliest.

164. And that is okay when you have a relatively docile dog
Sun Jun 15, 2014, 02:39 PM
Jun 2014

but when you have a dog with immense physical attributes and a high prey drive, it is disaster waiting to happen. I have three such dogs now. They have a predisposition to meet the unknown or the unwelcome with aggression. They were bred for it. It is why they excel at hunting, tracking, and retrieving. High prey drives and high fight drives.

It is not bad, but it must be channeled appropriately and there can not be compromises. I truly believe dogs can reason, and do it quite well. What they are not capable of is abstract thought. In other words, they do not understand that they can get on the bed because they cut their pad, but other times they cannot. They understand the bed is either okay to sleep on or not okay to sleep on.

I do agree that the problem with most pitbulls is the owners; however, most of the people who make that statement do not realize what being a responsible owner of a large and aggressive dog really looks like. You cannot be lovey-dovey with them and make it go away, but I am afraid that 95% of the people who make that statement believe that. In fact, with large aggressive dogs, affection MUST be earned and not just metted out randomly, or they tend to get the wrong idea real fast. Its not such a big deal with a little Cavalier Spaniel or a Maltese.

assholes, I believe the managers of this KFC also were in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

One of the many reasons the disability community pushed for an ADA was because so many people with disabilities had the experience of being kicked out of or prevented from entering restaurants, hotels, motels, and other public places because someone thought they were "unsightly" or might "disturb" the other customers. Because, you know, people who use wheelchairs, or people who even--heaven forfend!--drool, or have facial differences, are just too god awful to allow out in public.

This sort of attitude needs to be buried for good. It's especially vicious to subject a child to such prejudice.

There's nothing so genuinely ugly as a bigot.

Jun 2014

HARRISVILLE, Miss.–It’s another pit bull attack on a Mississippi child, and this time the four-year-old girl victim is critical, with injuries to her face and body. Her grandfather and his girlfriend were locked up after the attack.

The girl was playing inside her granddad’s trailer when the pit bulls came inside the house and dragged her into the backyard, said Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis. That’s where the girl was mauled.

The grandfather, Donald Mullins, was able to shoot two of the three dogs involved in the attack. The third one got away.

Once the little girl was on the way to the hospital, Mullins and his girlfriend, Rita Tompkins, were arrested and charged with child endangerment. Mullins was also wounded when he tried to stop the dogs. The sheriff told media that Mullins was keeping a total of 10 dogs on his land and they were all taken and put in the custody of the Miss. Animal Rescue League.

It takes work to properly train and exercise one dog, there would be way too many short cuts with 10. Mine is a Border Collie so I admit she takes a bit more time than some other breeds. But Pitties are fairly active dogs also, they would need mental and physical stimulation to get their needs met.

on only the best to train for show. These are not huge operations at any given time. Unfortunately "puppy mills," breeding popular breeds, have sprung up in recent decades. They aren't concerned with quality and disposition, and usually sell to pet stores. Check out area breeders before you buy from a pet shop and you'll find better quality puppies at fair prices for "pet quality." Anyone who has a ten or more adult dogs (especially if different breeds, or designated "pit bulls&quot are suspect, to be generous. It's even worse to hear, but not surprising, that they are being screwed by the insurance company as well. How sad that tragedy builds on top of tragedy.

"Disrupting the customers" equals some sanctimommy or daddy complaining because her badly raised precious snowflakes said, Ewww. I have seen this so many times. The underpaid employees wouldn't do this on their own, though it was an incredibly bad call. A long time ago, I worked at my friend's pumpkin farm in October. One of these crazy parents argued with me that I should tell some children to leave because they were "scaring" her children. I had been watching, and they were playing and being happy just like the rest of the kids. It finally came out that she was mad they were in the background of her 5000 pictures. She basically wanted the entire patch to herself to take her holiday postcards. She also accused them of "spreading disease." When I asked how on earth she knew that, she made a racist remark. At that point, I professionally but loudly asked her to leave. I knew I wouldn't be fired and it wasn't a job that paid my rent or food. But who knows about the people in a low wage restaurant like KFC? Customers bully all the time and one just ends up giving into their demands rather than risking your job.

A Holland Township woman is recovering from dog bites and abrasions after she was attacked in her own backyard by two wandering pit bulls.

Family members identified the victim as Rhonda Schroeder, 61.

Schroeder was in the backyard of her Paw Paw Street home around 9 a.m. Friday when the two pit bulls attacked a smaller dog that belongs to a family friend.

Schroeder’s next-door neighbor, Joe Winters, ran to help Schroeder. He said she was trying to protect the smaller dog with her own body, but the larger put bulls were relentless.

Winters described grabbing the bigger of the two pit bulls around the neck, and punching it as hard as he could as Schroeder kept trying to fend off the second pit bull.

Unfortunately, there's a small but vocal cadre of dog haters on DU who think the only solution to stop untrained, unsocialized or abused dogs from hurting people is to kill all every dog everywhere. And forget about doing anything the people who abuse them.

My dogs were the sweetest ever, but they are very unpredictable. One of them killed two cats and attacked another dog almost killing him. I did not train him to attack other animals. My brother had him for a while and tried to make him a fighting dog.

been severely hurt, but looks in no way scary. Most normal reactions would be sympathy and curiosity. Were other children running, screaming? I doubt it . They'd probably just be staring. Children with disfiguring injuries are often among their fellow students . This does, of course, require some preparation for the other kids. If two restaurant employees in a chain restaurant took it on themselves, to turn this child away, they'd have to be extremely stupid and barely able to function. My heart goes out to this child, but this story sounds pretty fishy to me. I truly hope she didn't lose the eye, but otherwise it looks like some pretty routine plastic surgery. Was this in one of the states that refused the ACA?

If I was a mover and shaker at Corporate KFC, I would do the following. In addition to direct reparations to the girl and her family, I would have that local KFC throw a private party. I would contact the pediatric departments at the local hospitals and invite children suffering from scars, burns and other disfigurements and their families to a private party at the KFC. This would create a support group for this little girl and other children. An atmosphere of comfort and perspective that could lead to future friendships and understanding amongst children facing similar social insecurities and serve as a real life training experience for those KFC employees. I would look upon this as a great opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade.

There are definitely good people in the world who will love this girl and be a comfort to her emotionally, but that is not going to help her when she's walking down the street and others react negatively. I formed this view many years ago when I worked in a psych hospital - you get the meds right first & then you can sit it talk therapy and work out your issues. Doing it backwards doesn't work. In this case I'd be putting the $$$ (and putting A LOT of pressure on the insurance cos. to do their part) towards whatever surgery/meds/care she needs to alleviate those issues. She is three and if much of this can be fixed through surgery that is the first step. Then you deal with whatever emotional issues are remaining.

pay for all of her reconstructive surgery. Poor little love. That, (along with a massive apology) would do the trick and be "appropriate," I should think:

"KFC launched an investigation as soon as we were made aware of this report. We take this very seriously, as we have zero tolerance for any kind of hurtful or disrespectful actions toward our guests. Our investigation is ongoing, but we have been in touch with the family and are committed to doing something appropriate for this beautiful little girl and her family. We will also work with the franchisee to take appropriate action at the restaurant once the specifics of the incident are determined," said KFC spokesman Rick Maynard.

My wife and have a pit bull though and it's about the sweetest, gentlest, and most loving animal you'd ever want to meet (he's also proudly gay). My mother/father-in-law have one too, as do my brother & sister in law (with two children under 7). All 5 of our nieces and nephews have grown up (the oldest being 11, and these dogs are all around 7-8 yo now) around these dogs, and we've never feared for their safety for one moment. That's because they've been raised properly, and they are not from 'aggressive' stock ... which sadly, do exist (and not JUST with Pits, mind you, they're just the most popular dog people have done this with) because of IDIOTS thinking it's a nifty idea to breed the most aggressive/territorial specimens to produce fighting and/or 'guard' dogs.

All I really need to read from the mauling story to understand what happened is 'Mississippi', 'Trailer', and '10 dogs'. This idiot probably thought it was a good idea to train some of these animals to 'protect the land' or some stupid crap like that. AFAIC it should be expressly illegal to 'train' any animal to 'defend' ANYTHING (or to fight, of course), and the penalties should be STIFF, or to purposefully breed animals to produce an aggressive offspring. There should also be laws regarding how many large dogs a person can own, outside of perhaps professional breeding operations (which should have to be licensed and regulated and inspected) or perhaps on actual working ranches.

IMHO, it's really no more correct to call Pit Bull a 'violent species' than it is to call people of African descent, or Muslims (or any one else you might wanna pick) as 'violent'. It's the exact same kind of stereotyping, involving the same invalid 'sampling' techniques.

They are going to hire a third party to investigate it further.

"We continue to take this report seriously, and of course have great sympathy for Victoria and her family. Since we have so far not been able to verify the incident in our internal investigation, we have also hired a third-party consultant to conduct an independent investigation to help us resolve this matter," said Kirk Hannon, of the Jackson KFC franchise, in a statement. "We have always prided ourselves on respect for all people and we will continue to emphasize this to all our employees. In addition, regardless of the outcome of the current investigation, KFC Corporation has committed $30,000 to assist with Victoria's medical bills. Along with KFC Corporation, we are determined to get to the truth and address the situation appropriately.""
