I made a stupid post, I was wrong, I apologize

It was the one where i got all preachy about who 'deserves' to post here. I said that anyone who doesn't vote for the Democratic nominee doesn't deserve to post here. That's not only a stupid and divisive statement, it's also wrong.

There are plenty of cases where it wouldn't hurt a Democratic candidacy for president and I've been reminded in the past that some folks believe that we need to move beyond the two-party system and want to take every opportunity to register that with their votes.

Aside from all of the rationalizing, though, what means the most to me is the free flow of ideas. It occurred to me that I'm really not capable of adhering to my own preachy words and read just about everything in front of me. I think the dialogue would be much less interesting and, more importantly, less enlightening, without the voices of even those progressives who fall out with our politicians and our party politics.

So I apologize for saying such a stupid thing. I couldn't live with saying it, and neither should anyone else.

Glad you're here! bigtree has been around for a long time. WAY long enough, as some of us here are, to have generated all kinds of bloopers and alleged bloopers. And equally long enough to be considered a sage. Always appreciated bigtree's posts! There's a BUNCH of folks here who are wonderful thinkers and writers! A LOT gets kicked around here. Tasted and savored, and chewed up 'n' spit out. We're lucky!

We all do that from time to time.

So you know though, there are many reasons I post (somewhere else) at times now.

It is not you. The primary wars are going to be real bad...and they have started, even before the midterms.

People are truly fixated on the presidency, which is important, but people have truly forgotten abput the critical importance of local and state politics, where ultimately farm teams are formed.

I don't know if my local Council president intends to go any further, but if he does, you heard the name Todd Gloria here first. One person I hope decides to run for higher office, and like him, I am sure here are thousands others.

But the primaries are going to be umberable. We are getting it already.

I like most of your threads, and I love your screen name too, so I stayed out of it.

But above and beyond DU, we are told on our educational trails that we have Constitutional rights. Sometimes we study civics and learn lessons therefrom, and so we come to DU with these backgrounds instilled in us (some of us, anyway).

We talk a lot about the right to vote which we are guaranteed, but in civics class, heavily tilted towards civil rights and responsibilities, I was taught during election time, if we think neither candidate is deserving of the win, we can abstain from voting. If one does abstain, he or she should not complain about the outcome of the election. I think that is true, and part of your thread mentioned if one does not support the Democrat by voting for him or her, he or she should not complain about the consequences should the Republican prevail. So it appears you got that part absolutely correct.

I agree that it takes a big person (or a bigtree as noted above) to make a public apology on DU, so take a bow. I am pretty sure most of us have made mistakes during our tenure here. I sure have.

Sam

Good to have you with us! Great points, too! While I've rather loudly argued for Hillary Clinton and will vote for her, Elizabeth Warren speaks to (and for) me more. But if Hillary's the one (and Elizabeth Warren has said she isn't running) then I'm for her all the way! And, um, consider the alternative. Is there ANY even halfway palatable republic-CON out there? ANY? If there are, chances are they're voices and faces from the past.

I did not see subject post, and have no idea what my reaction would have been, but the actuality of apologizing, like so many formerly standard acts of civility, is so rare these days that I have to applaud you.

Few politicians can ever bring themselves to do it at all. Of the few that have, rarely has it been a true apology.

And when it comes to the rich and famous, Katy bar the door.

You gained my admiration with one post.

After all these years on DU I tend to summarily ignore the sorts of posts which presume to dictate who is worthy of being on DU and who is not.

So, if that's what you were doing, thank you for having second thoughts about it.

I'm fairly sure that, for the most part, people are on DU because they are passionate about politics and governance and world affairs and the state of our nation. And we all approach these various issues with differing perceptions arising out of our own unique life experiences and levels of understanding.

A monolithic DU would be boring indeed.

17. Vote for Democrats
Sat Jun 14, 2014, 06:09 AM

Winning elections is important — therefore, advocating in favor of Republican nominees or in favor of third-party spoiler candidates that could split the vote and throw an election to our conservative opponents is never permitted on Democratic Underground ... In Democratic primaries, members may support whomever they choose. But when general election season begins, DU members must support Democratic nominees (EXCEPT in rare cases ...) ... Everyone here on DU needs to work together to elect more Democrats and fewer Republicans ... If you are bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for our candidates during election season, we'll assume you are rooting for the other side

I have noticed that people here have a trigger finger to narc you out for what I consider not a big deal. there's a n ass load of VERY thin skinned people here. I was on REDDIT, and the kids DGAF constantly. Oh yeah, you'll be banned from posting because most of the moderators are 17 years old, but I personally expected more here at DU.

Some of the juries I have sat on ...that someone was offended by was basically just a pretty good argument, and should have never gotten to a jury.
Maybe because I'm a LIBRA I tend to give more, but there were times that I know people were picked on for no good reason, and that's a flaw in the system. just spitballin'....

Second, I kept wondering if you recalled Kendrick Meek, the Democratic nominee for the US Senate from Florida, who was openly hated on DU while DU permitted open promotion of his REPUBLICAN opponent. After that, these dramas about DU being 'just for Democrats' reeks of bullshit, selective thinking and conservatism.

The Republican was Rubio, and I sincerely doubt anyone here supported Rubio. Would need to see a link to that. Of course, Debbie Wasserman openly supported a GOP candidate who was a friend of hers, for something, and evidently that was fine with the DNC, or Third Way.

Meek, IIRC, did not get much support from the DNC.

If only because they would most assuredly be banned if they did.

They can just sit silently, trying to divide and conquer, however, as we saw in 2012, it takes a lot of dividing to get you banned. It will be the same in 2 years.
