The Republican Party has a lot of problems, and if theres one that doesnt get enough attention, its the partys broad appeal to provocateurs, faux martyrs, and grifters. Just look at the speakers list for the Republican Leadership Conference, which began on Thursday. Theres Donald Trump, the man who made birtherism a national cause; Herman Cain, whose presidential run was a glorified book tour; Dinesh DSouza, who just pleaded guilty to a felony campaign finance violation, and Phil Robertson, the Duck Dynasty star wholike Cliven Bundybelieves black Americans were better off under racist oppression.
In fairness, Im sure Robertson despises slavery. (Bundy, by contrast, wondered if blacks werent better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things.) He just thinks it wasnt so bad under Jim Crow. I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person, said Robertson, discussing his childhood in Louisiana. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. Im with the blacks, because were white trash. Were going across the field.
Theyre singing and happy.

(90,061 posts)The has-been after life can be pretty good too, the deadenders keep giving money for a long time, and the 1%-ers will keep paying as long as you keep saying what they want said. We have an economy that rewards bullshit. Trump's biggest asset is his name, a guy like Trump, his biggest asset is his name.
