June 11, 2014 |
Cornell University released a large study [in March] positing that poverty causes higher instances of child abuse and neglect. Considering the advance publicity, it seemed to me that the average reader might overlook the crucial role that socioeconomic and racial biases play in determining which families come under the scrutiny of the child welfare system to begin with.
While poverty is widely recognized as a risk factor in abuse and neglect cases, it is by no means a cause of abuse and neglect. Children are just as likely to be abused or neglected in wealthy homes as in poor ones. However, wealthier white families are simply not under the same scrutiny that brings families of color of low socioeconomic status to the attention of child welfare authorities.

and that's without the added dimension of systemic racial bias and its influence on suspicions of abuse or neglect.

Someone called on me once, it was weird. They DRUG tested me like a felon. I was so mad. After two weeks of testing, they couldn't find anything so they harassed ne for two month until i threatened to sue for harassment and told them to take me to court.

(10,362 posts)Think about it. If a person lives on a few acres, children screaming won't always be audible to neighbors.
Poor people tend to live in tenements with paper-thin walls, every raised voice is audible to their neighbors.
Not sure I agree with this. 57% of divorcees cite money problems as a cause for their divorce. Living on the cusp puts a tremendous amount of pressure on people and on their relationship with others. Some crack under that pressure. This isn't an excuse to abuse children but I do believe the stress it causes has a direct affect.
