Obama likens denying climate change to thinking the moon is made of cheese

During a commencement speech to graduates of the University of California-Irvine, Obama said some in Congress duck the question of climate change by claiming that they are not a scientist, which, he said, translates to: “I know that manmade climate change really is happening, but if I admit it, I’ll be run out of town by a radical fringe that thinks climate science is a liberal plot. So, I’m not going to admit it.”

That view, the president said, is a “fairly serious threat to the future,” but “at least they have the brass to say what they actually think.”

“I’m telling you all of this because I want to light a fire under you,” Obama told nearly 8,600 graduates at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. “As the generation that is being shortchanged by inaction, you do not have to accept that this is the way that it has to be.”

Scientists, Obama said, have long established that the world needs to fight climate change. When President John F. Kennedy wanted to send people to the moon, Obama said, many said it wouldn’t work, but few denied its existence or said the moon was “made of cheese.”

I think the reason why many of them deny climate change is because they have an antipathy toward making a better planet for future generations. The reason for this is tied to radical Christianity radical beliefs of other religions.

The very idea of making human life sustainable on Earth goes against the grain of one of their core beliefs -- that life is a period of tribulation for us to endure before we die and hopefully go to heaven. They don't want people to live happily and peacefully on Earth, really. They want life to be hard and full of sorrow so that people will long for the release of death and the pleasures of heaven and being with God. If people start trying to make life better on Earth, they'll want to stay here, and they'll be putting their efforts into trying to make this world better instead of trying to please God so they'll have a pleasant afterlife. Seen in that light, our attempts to make a better world are a direct threat to the survival of their religions

Humanism and environmental consciousness are a threat to religions that emphasize sin and damnation and rules to be followed in order to have a happy afterlife. They essentially do not want life on this planet to be a peaceful, fulfilling, and enlightening experience. They shun peace negotiations with other countries and they despise breakthroughs in medicine that allow people to live without the consequences of their sins. Essentially, they loathe any sort of progress toward making Earth a good place to live. The next time you hear one of those people from a RW think tank ridicule climate change, ask yourself where that bitterness is coming from.
