Remember when President George W. Bush boasted, mission accomplished? Was not the wicked Saddam Hussein lynched by US Shia allies? Wasnt the dreaded al-Qaida defeated and its leader, Osama bin Laden, assassinated? Remember all that crowing from Washington about draining the swamp in Iraq?
As soon as the US knocks down one challenger to its domination of the Mideast which I call the American Raj another rises up. The latest: ISIS, a fierce jihadist force that now controls large parts of Syria and Iraq.
ISIS is a combination of Sunni jihadist groups fighting the Shia-backed Damascus government of Bashar Assad( a US enemy backed by Shia Iran), and resurgent units of Saddams old Baathist army, led by Izzat Ibrahin al-Douri, the last surviving member of Saddams inner circle, and a handful of al-Qaida in Iraq.
They are battling to overthrow the US-installed Shia regime in Baghdad of Nuri al-Maliki, an Iranian ally. There are suspicions ISIS may be secretly financed by Sunni Saudi Arabia, a US ally."
* The 2003 invasion of Iraq, the stupidest war in US history, which was rousingly backed by Congress and the media, has produced a monumental mess of mind-numbing complexity"
* This awful mess can be directly traced to neoconservative strategists in Washington clustered around Vice President Dick Cheney. In 2002, their primary goal, according to Cheney, was to wreck Iraq, the most industrially advanced and progressive Arab state, so removing a major foe of Israel, and then grabbing Iraqs oil. "

(30 posts)When I first heard of ISIS or ISIL, take your pick I guess, I though much as I had about Crimea - if they want to join another country (or in this case, start a new one), then fine, we should not arbitrate that if the Iraqis cannot prevent it themselves. And I believe this is the basic course that President Obama would adopt, and maybe it will come to pass. But then again, when a group starts shooting their captives in the back of the head after lining them up in a ditch . . . well some things should not be allowed to pass. I do not know how to impose a more genteel manner upon the gentlemen of ISIS, but I think they need a good talking-to at the least.

(2,682 posts)This story of shooting captives in the back of the head may be a put-up job just to incite the masses here in the US. Sorta like the babies-in-the-incubators story of the first Gulf War. Not that I doubt that they are dead, we just don't know who pulled the trigger.

(2,682 posts)there are no single words to describe the utter revulsion I feel towards Bush/Cheney and the PNAC cabal that started this mess. Saddam was a SOB, but he was Iraq's SOB. And Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11. He kept a lid on the religious factions war against each other and kept the government pretty much secular. Then we went in a fucked it up because GWB had to show his dick was bigger than Pappy's. And Cheney, facing a shareholder suit alleging breach of fiduciary duty over the purchase of an asbestos firm, needed to funnel large amounts of money into Haliburton. And PNAC -- a bunch of freaks who thought they could re-shape the world.
There was a time, many years ago, that I found things about the US of which I could be proud. That list gets shorter and shorter as we attempt to control the world with military might. President Obama so far has kept us out of new wars, and wars exist across the world at any given time. That flatulent piece of road dung, McCain, who never heard of a war that he didn't want us to get involved in, has passed his shelf-date and should retire before he convinces some other pin-head that invading Iraq again would be a good idea.
Damn, if I couldn't go on and on about how utterly stupid the RWNJ's have been in the news in the last couple of days. I'm turning off the news and listening to 60's rock n' roll and thinking of other things just to calm my anger.
