here's the trick.

You go to GD and look at the threads with the largest number of posts and you see On "narcing out" negligent parents as a likely suspect with over 500 posts.

That's the one!

Then you go to page 3 and see another huge thread locked because the OP was deleted and you found the source of the debate.

Easy, eh?

(But then, if you start reading the threads, you just ruined your day.)

On "narcing out" negligent parents thread had only 370-something replies. It's the other 500+ mopinko thread where she deleted her OP that started it all.

And on DU we can't let threads on how a neighbor is a terrible mother to just die. As if that wasn't enough, Boson Bean just started another one.

Me, I'm in the middle of moving, and it isn't going well, so any mild diversion is welcome.

I support reaching out and helping someone in need first. If there is imminent danger, then intervene but otherwise... keep a watchful eyeout and don't increase life trauma for others because it's easy.

I see a world of difference between fingering a murderer and, say, snitching out a neighbor for a pot plant in the corner of the garden.

you have to follow your conscience.

I wouldn't have snitched based on what she said. Regardless, everyone has to do what they feel is best. Even if that means getting called a busybody.

It’s no wonder whistleblowers are so often so controversial–and are sometimes called snitches and traitors. Whether or not you agree with their choice, they embody the strongest moral fiber, even as they embody betrayal and disloyalty. They remain true to public values of honesty and democracy, even as they are making a personal choice about right and wrong of a kind and at a scale which should be made by institutions rather than by individuals. And, inevitably, they are both traitor to their organization, whether a company or a government, and the most faithful employees and truest patriots, for they act in the service of the founding ideals of the organization when they, rightly or wrongly, believe that that organization has strayed from its path.
