Paraplegic Man Kicks Off World Cup - What You Didn't See On TV

The whole world is tuning in this week to watch the World Cup, yet the most significant moment of the event is getting virtually no television coverage. Those who watched the official broadcast may have seen a brief glimpse of what we're talking about.

29 year-old Juliano Pinto, a paraplegic man, making the first kick at the 2014 World Cup before the games officially began. With the aid of the Walk Again Project's exoskeleton, Pinto was able to kick a ball by using only his brain.

The robotic exoskeleton works via a brain-machine interface that allows users to send signals to the machine via neural pathways. Pinto mentally "told" his wearable technology to move his leg, and voila. Researchers are hopeful that as strides like this continue to be made in the biotechnological field, exoskeletons will become the norm in assisted mobility.
