Florida enacts abortion law requiring doctors to evaluate foetus survival

The Republican governor of Florida, Rick Scott, on Friday signed into law a bill prohibiting women from obtaining abortions if the fetus is deemed able to survive outside the womb.

The late-term abortion law, HB 1047, requires women seeking an abortion to consult a doctor to determine whether a fetus can survive. It replaces the current state law which prohibits women from obtaining abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy unless their lives are at risk.

Critics say the new law further restricts women’s access to abortion.

“By signing this bill into law, Governor Rick Scott is taking Florida two steps backwards,” Planned Parenthood's Dr Sujatha Prabhakaran said in a statement.

“This law limits health exceptions and could risk women’s health and lives.”

BUT, it sure does not help that Florida is the home of our weak, craven, gets lots of perks and pork chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schulz.

is your negative opinion of Rep. Schultz pertinent to the topic? The thread refers to state government legislation, something she has nothing to do with.

as much as she pats herself on the back for delivering the state in the presdiential elections, she is NOT attacking the Democrats who are being silent now. And of course, per your other question, she needs to attack Scott's abortion restrictions, but that should be part and parcel for ANY DEMOCRAT.

Her speaking out on anything will fall on deaf ears in the Fl Legislature. Its full of rw crazies who are strongly supported by their rw crazy constitutants. What we need is strong democratic candidates running throughout the state. All we have now is Charlie, a former republican. Damn!

Yes, we can talk about how the Florida GOP is arguably the most extreme GOP in the Nation. I do not say this lightly, as while Mississippi and Texas are GOP, Florida, by virtue of being the 4th largest state, soon to be the 3rd, can have impact across the nation, if not the whole continent!

However, Debbie can and should be a whip the the Florida democrats, and it would be her duty even if she was not a Florida lady. However, we saw her kneecap progressive Dems all the time. Kendrick Meek, nothing need be said. Alan Grayson, nothing need be said. As long as she is running things, the Florida Democrats will cointinue to be the effective branch of the GOP, which will enable and emobolden some of the Tea Party circus clowns we have down here.

Scott is a criminal and a monster who should be in jail. The challenge will be getting out the vote - most people cannot stand him but in off years, most also don't vote.
