During the 1980's, when the Reagan administration was trying to justify it's support of Saddam Hussein, they kept referring to him as 'a bulwark against Islamic Fundamentalism.'

I wouldn't have wanted to have a beer with him (or with Reagan, for that matter), but his horrible sons notwithstanding he kept the region under control...until Dick & The Neocons wanted his oil.
