By Martin Matishak - 06/16/14 11:22 AM EDT
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Monday blasted the idea that the U.S. could work with Iran to stop the Islamist insurgency roiling Iraq.
It would be the height of folly to believe that the Iranian regime can be our partner in managing the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, McCain said in a statement.
The reality is, U.S. and Iranian interests and goals do not align in Iraq, and greater Iranian intervention would only make the situation dramatically worse, he added.
McCains comments come after Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday said he wouldnt rule out the possibility that Washington could cooperate with Tehran to counter an al-Qaeda-inspired extremist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Whether leaders in Washington like it or not, the United States needs Iran to get involved in the current crisis in Iraq in order to prevent the government in Baghdad from collapsing, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Sunday, adding that talks with Tehran need to begin as soon as possible. "We are probably going to need their help to hold Baghdad from the the Sunni Muslim militant group that has been taking control of areas in northern Iraq, Graham said on CBS Face the Nation. "The Iranians have an interest. They have Shia populations to protect. We need a dialogue of some kind," he added.

(25,240 posts)I believe it is intentional that McCain & Graham are saying the opposite. This way - whatever the President chooses to do in this situation - they can say he did the wrong thing. They are putting Obama in a no-win situation. In the end - the American People will not remember who said what - and the President will shoulder the blame.
These guys are really sinister.
I just hope the President doesn't get sucked into this mess. This is BushCo's fault to begin with and now it has festered into an inevitable civil war. This is Iraq's problem and they need to work it out for themselves.
Don't put our military at risk. Don't spend any more of our money.
If the President were as devious as these guys are - he'd move to put this up for a vote in Congress. Let the onus fall on Boehner & McConnell. Let their Repug's in the House and the Senate be put on record. Let them battle it out.
