America

"Oh, and I say it again, you've been had. You've been took. You've been hoodwinked. Bamboozled. Led astray. Run amok!" -- Minister Malcolm X; Speech in Harlem.

“Well, I see hands, and shapes of faces,
Reaching up, by not quite touching the Promised Land.
Well, I hear please and prayers, and
Desperate whispers sayin‘,
‘Oh Lord, please give us a helping hand’.”
-- Jimi Hendrix

It is pretty clear that, once again, dark forces within American society are attempting to involve the US in war in Iraq. That it is entirely about who has control over Iraqi oil reserves in obvious. But if one listens to republicans in Congress, or flips on Fox News, the “real” story is that that gosh-darned secular, radical Islamist, atheist President Obama is at fault.

And threatening our national security!

What’s happening in Iraq today poses a threat to our Home Land! It’s mushroom clouds and yellow cake on steroids. The Iranians!

There have been many times when I’ve wished that President Obama would channel the strength of LBJ in getting things done in DC. Today, I worry that those dark forces will attempt to get him to make the error that kept LBJ from being among the very greatest of American presidents.

We need to engage in a serious effort to keep the nation out of Iraq. That means making phone calls and sending e-mails to the White House and to Congress. And writing letters-to-the-editor of the newspapers in our area.

We need a Peace Offensive. Are you in?

Iraq once wasn't enough of a mistake.

The so-called hawks would like us to make the same mistake twice. In total agreement but how do you define intelligence to an idiot?

It still seems like a good idea. They use our money and our bodies for their wars, we are the ones who can stop it.

While it seems difficult to accomplish when Big Oil holds more cash-on-hand and all it buys than Crassus dreamed possible, only People Power can change things.

Tough when Corporate McPravda print bilge like: New York Times Says "Lack Of Major Wars May Be Hurting Economic Growth" by Tyler Cowen. Helps give people "guts" 'n' stuff. The professor's on the CFR, so perhaps he gets lots of love from Big Oil.

hasn't had that from the beginning, pos. because he only served one term in the Senate before he ran for president. It took years for Johnson to develop his power base and he was probably not as nice or principled as Mr. O.

He doesn't have the white face of LBJ, so no matter what he does, it will never be recognized as legitimate by the vapid members of Congress nor apparently, by the staidly crew of DU.

For 6 years we have heard a number of idiotic hair-on-fire dystopian assumptions here on DU about what he "would do" (no matter what) and every one these faulty prognostications has been wrong - e.g., "bombing and sending in thousands of troops to <fill in the blank country - Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Libya, Crimea/Ukraine, etc>, "cutting or eliminating <fill in the blank program - Social Security, Medicare, etc>", "appointing <fill the blank person to a position - e.g., Larry Summers, etc>". People swore up and down that he would never let the Bush tax cuts expire that final time and swore even more that he would "cave" just to keep the government open last October.

It's obvious that he has no respect here if people continue to assume the worst out him for every executive decision that he faces. It's an insult to say -

I worry that those dark forces will attempt to get him to make the error that kept LBJ from being among the very greatest of American presidents.

like he's some moron like Palin or McCain and would "cave" to these "dark forces".

The irony about LBJ is that as much as people worship JFK, it was LBJ who shepherded through the series of civil rights laws as well as the expansion of of Social Security (through the establishment of Medicare) that finally help to lurch this country forward towards "the more perfect union". But because those laws would not have much of an impact on the "majority group" in this country, their historic enactment was ultimately dismissed and overshadowed by the disgrace that was Vietnam. And so that became "the history" as written by "the majority" that, according to you, "kept LBJ from being among the very greatest of American presidents." Yet to many of us who benefited from those civil rights laws among my own generation (which includes this President), Johnson was unheralded figure - despite all the sausage-making that occurred to get the stuff done.

I'm sorry H2O Man - I highly respect the many (and often severe) sacrifices that you have made for your convictions. You are to be applauded. But to add to the continual accumulation of instance after instance after instance of "doubt" leveled at this President, turns me off. IMHO - The "Peace Offensive" needs to be concentrated at the MEDIA, perhaps even to the point of threatening boycott of those outlets that continue to perpetuate the war-mongering, feeding frenzy "reporters" and pseudo-journalists, as they continue to solely trumpet the voices of the neocons on their outlets..
