General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI finally lost it on Facebook today, and this rant cost me 27 'friends'!
"The most appalling part of the unfolding tragedy that is Iraq's civil war is that it was completely predictable and was, in fact, predicted by many, many experts on the Middle East! Further compounding the tragedy is that those lonely voices who urged restraint and/or development of a well thought-out 'occupation-and-exit strategy', like then-head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Shinseki, were either shouted down or shoved aside by the ravenous warmongers, their cheerleaders and others hell-bent on toppling that admittedly despicable thug, Saddam Hussein.
Iraq was and is not Japan or Germany, both of whom we occupied after the end of WW2. Both of those nations had largely homogenous populations, unlike Iraq, yet the U.S. and its democratic allies still meticulously planned for 3-4 years what would be absolutely necessary to establish stable, post-war, democratic societies in those conquered nations. Rebuilding and stabilizing Japan and Germany took MASSIVE amounts of resources and more time than was involved in winning the war itself, yet history clearly shows that it was worth it to do so.
I sincerely hope and pray that a workable solution can be found to stop the civil war in Iraq, but I want to hear NOTHING-- not ONE D*MN WORD!-- from the Cheneys, Wolfowitzes, et al, who created the mess! They had their chance, and the blew it, so they need to shut up and sit down!

Speaking as a Freak-in-good-standing, your rant is pretty mild, compared with the actions you are excoriating. Anybody who bails on you for that needs a thicker epidermis.

(12,471 posts)I say these sort of things all the time.
It's a good way to separate the wheat from the chaff as far as your Facebook "friends" go.
I do know what you mean about Iraq, though one did not have to be a Middle East "expert" to predict it.
We knew, when we were told by Wolfie that the Iraq war would cost very little, that he and the rest of the war mongers were lying.
We knew that Shrub just wanted to get Saddam, because of the threat that was posed to Poppy Bush. It had nothing to do with 9/11, no matter how many times that were told it did.
We knew that this was going to profit the companies that were doing the ancillary duties like logistics, or food service, or the like. We knew that they were robbing WE THE PEOPLE blind, in favor of them, the corporations.
Worry not that you lose friends over this, because the ones that remain, are the ones that really matter. The ones who can see through the bovine fecal material, and actually think for themselves, rather than be spoon fed the propaganda.
I only hope that this results in more rantings like this from you on Facebook, and as many other outlets are out there. Heck, turn one of them into a letter to the editor at your local paper. Chances are, it will get published, because few folks write letters to the editor any more. Not to mention, they are always looking for alternative points of view.
Keep it lit, and keep it strong.

(5,279 posts)In my not very humble opinion, you show a notable lack of blunt force trauma words (swearing, name calling, pointing out the failing of anyone's ancestry) for your post to be called a "Rant". I realize each of us has our own style, but I don't see that making anyone cry.
It is however a clearly thought out, well expressed, succinct summation of many people's frustration.

(50,949 posts)And in Germany and Japan, the US didn't inexplicably fire the entire government. They kept the lower level people to keep the trains running and give them local advice on infrastructure. The way we did it in Iraq defies all of our experience and all logic.

(6,335 posts)Right-Wing Media Ignore Iraqi Resistance To Status Of Forces Agreement To Blame Obama For Violence
Right-wing media have claimed that the current violence in Iraq is the result of the 2011 withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq and President Obama's willful failure to secure a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. In reality, Iraq refused the terms of a SOFA with the U.S. despite Obama's efforts to maintain a military presence there. more

(15,435 posts)that I set up when I was involved with Occupy Movement here in Florida. Recently someone contacted me about some posts I made through ATP Tennis, I scratched my head wondering HOW they knew about it. Says volumes about my lack of Facebook use, seems I left it open to the public! I didn't care because I rarely use it.
BUT, today I got kind of upset! I LOVE SQUIRRELS, have raised many and feed them all the time. All I have to do is walk outside and start talking and they start climbing down my oak trees! So, listening to Stephanie Miller on FSTV and it seem PREIBUS resurrected the squirrel they used back when they went after ACORN!
My avatar on Facebook is a squirrel with a camera, I LIKE it but seriously hate to think anyone would think I'm a Repuke or use a squirrel for a reminder. Seems they've decided to use The Giant Squirrel to start digging around for info on Hillary and implying it's because she's NUTS!
An absolute INSULT to squirrels IMO, not that I'm one who is fully behind Hillary. Still, if I have to I'll vote for her. DadGumIt! Leave my squirrels alone!
BTW, nice rant, sorry about your friends unfortunately Life Happens! I have a Repuke sister who's also a fundamentalist Christian, but we get along fine, AS LONG as we stay away from and religion!
