U.S. Special Operations forces captured one of the suspected ringleaders of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi in a secret raid in Libya over the weekend, the first time one of the accused perpetrators of the 2012 assault has been apprehended, according to U.S. officials.
The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured Sunday near Benghazi by American troops, working alongside the FBI, following months of planning, and was now in U.S. custody in a secure location outside Libya. The officials said there were no casualties in the operation, and that all U.S. personnel involved have safely left Libya.
Khattalas apprehension is a major victory for the Obama administration, which has been criticized for having failed so far to bring those responsible for the Benghazi attacks to justice.

The Washington Post learned about the capture Monday but agreed to a request from the White House to delay publication of a story because of security concerns.

UPDATED TO ADD:
The United States has an unwavering commitment to bring to justice those responsible for harming Americans. Since the deadly attacks on our facilities in Benghazi, I have made it a priority to find and bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of four brave Americans. I recently authorized an operation in Libya to detain an individual charged for his role in these attacks, Ahmed Abu Khatallah. The fact that he is now in U.S. custody is a testament to the painstaking efforts of our military, law enforcement, and intelligence personnel. Because of their courage and professionalism, this individual will now face the full weight of the American justice system.
Even as we welcome the success of this operation, we also pause to remember the four Americans who gave their lives in Benghazi representing their country: Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty. As I said shortly after the attack, they exemplified the values that we stand for as a nation, including a commitment to freedom and justice. All Americans should be grateful for their service, just as we are grateful to all our personnel civilian and military who represent our country around the globe. We will continue to honor our fallen by carrying on their efforts in support of the Libyan peoples aspirations to live in a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic society.
With this operation, the United States has once again demonstrated that we will do whatever it takes to see that justice is done when people harm Americans. We will continue our efforts to bring to justice those who were responsible for the Benghazi attacks. We will remain vigilant against all acts of terrorism, and we will continue to prioritize the protection of our service-members and civilians overseas. We will also sustain our support for the Libyan people, as they work to overcome years of tyranny and do the difficult work of building a democracy.

(14,400 posts)of this going up on Politico there were no fewer than 4 posters, all the usual suspects, calling this just another distraction. I think this time Obama is using Benghazi to distract from the IRS or maybe it was Bergdahl.
I can never keep the huge web of nefarious Obama conspiracies straight.

(21,563 posts)i'm guessing congress will complaign they were not notified before using troops in libya. i'm sure they will say there were no assurances given that our troops would be safe and therefor it shows obama is reckless and does not care about the troops.

(52,205 posts)well, not immunity from being prosecuted per se, but he can do what congress did for north and poindexter -- in exchange for testifying "truthfully" before congress, and evidence they give can't be used against them.
this forced walsh and the entire iran-contra team to assiduously avoid reading the news or watching tv to bolster their claim that they arrived at all their evidence through means other than that congressional testimony. ultimately the courts didn't believe that claim and the convictions against north and poindexter were thrown out.
as a practical matter it makes it very challenging to successfully prosecute someone if they get this sort of deal and then tell everything.

(81,220 posts)The article or commentary or whatever it was - referred to him as "the deadliest President" to terrorists and terrorist groups that has come along for America in a LONG time. They ticked off Muammar al-Gaddafi, Osama bin Laden, and quite a few others. Add another one (although this one is captured, not killed - but still!).

(750 posts)The Arabs have an investment in the American media that is under the radar.
Plus the Arabs have investments in huge banking systems, and high profile corporations, especially the Bin Laden family good friends and business partners in real-estate, military industrial equipment through Bush and Cheney via the Carlyle group all kept under cover by the media.
The Arab Bin Laden family is a key player in the Iraq war tragedy they are known financial supporters of the wars.
To say Hillary is profiteering through book sales advantaged by news that a suspected ringleader of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi is captured is a very lame denigration effort to characterize Hillary by taking advantage of a situation to make money.
If anything the Arabs gave Bush nineteen suicide terrorists and an Egyptian to slam into the Twin Towers giving Bush reasons to go to war for the longest time in history profiteering trillions of dollars.
Bush said he wanted Osama Bin Laden dead or alive. But like a real cowboy changed his mind and said he didnt care. But America spent ten years in the wrong country fighting a proxy war for the Arabs.
Now America is waiting for the real heros to make the claim that this Bush/Cheney/ Arab/ GOP is the new modern crime syndicate that need to be eradicated, removed or destroy utterly extirpated, banished from politics throughout America and the world.

(7,309 posts)Very, very similar. I know I got kicked out of a bar for daring to call someone who said "Jews control the media" an anti-semite. He said he didn't want me saying that out loud.
Well, I was drunk and I'm Jewish, so I had to say something.
