Fixing Americas bridges would cost around $120 billion.

But lets put that in perspective.
The Iraq War cost us $2 TRILLION!
The annual revenue from income tax is around $3 trillion. With the top 10% paying about 70% (this is only Income Tax, not all taxes)
So that is $2 trillion of the total.
If there were a 10 year plan to fix the bridges, not only would it put many, many people to work. Not only would it benefit every person and business in the country. Not only do we need to do it for public safety.
BUT, it could be paid for with an increase of 0.5% on the wealthiest Americans.

Remember, the same GOP mudcrawlers who had no problem spending $2 trillion on a misbegotten war, (and let's not talk about the casualties) would fight this to the end.
They really hate this country.

But Republicanoids seem unlikely to let that happen.

White House FACT SHEET: U.S. Crisis Support Package for Ukraine

President Obama and Vice President Biden have made U.S. support for Ukraine an urgent priority as the Ukrainian government works to establish security and stability, pursue democratic elections and constitutional reform, revive its economy, and ensure government institutions are transparent and accountable to the Ukrainian people. Ukraine embarks on this reform path in the face of severe challenges to its sovereignty and territorial integrity, which we are working to address together with Ukraine and our partners in the international community.

The United States is committed to ensuring that Ukrainians alone are able to determine their country’s future without intimidation or coercion from outside forces. To support Ukraine, we are today announcing a new package of assistance totaling $50 million to help Ukraine pursue political and economic reform and strengthen the partnership between the United States and Ukraine.

Security Assistance: In addition to the $50 million package, today we are announcing the provision of $8 million of non-lethal military assistance to allow the Ukrainian armed forces and State Border Guard Service to fulfill their core security missions

You can blame the other side all you want but Democrats have been running the Executive since 2009. Obama had no problem with telling people he was going to start a war in Syria -even without Congress. Then Putin stepped in. But that's all forgotten. Just keep playing...

Also do some research into what Obama has asked Congress for (who control funding) and what they authorized.
But thanks for playing.

4. The one thing you got to remember about military spending
Tue Jun 17, 2014, 04:30 PM

is that, for the most part, it's not meant to last decades, as with the expected life of bridges. Military hardware is expected to get used up, to be destroyed. That way, you have to buy more.

If our infrastructure got used up as fast as military hardware, it would be profitable to keep things in working order, and we'd never have to worry about it falling apart.

6. Republicans don't drive on bridges

they must fly instead.

You would think people would agree on something as universal as fixing bridges that we all use. But no. They would fight this tooth and nail just because its "stimulus" and "Keynesian socialism". No Republicans gave a F when the bridge collapsed in Minneapolis during evening rush hour, or when the whole residential street collapsed onto railroad tracks in Baltimore.

How do they know no Republicans were affected? Or maybe they just don't care.

I worked in civil engineering, land planning & large scale site planning & design and environmental planning for 25 years until the Great Recession put me and thousands of other engineers, planners, architects, landscape architects, soil scientists and contractors out of work.

Many of my former co-workers had to go overseas to find work. Let's bring them home and put us all back to work rebuilding our public infrastructure, cities and parks.

10. Just for clarity's sake

Whenever anyone talks about trillions of dollars, it'd be good to translate that into billions. A trillion is 1,000 billion dollars. Thus, the cost of fixing every damned bridge in America would only amount to ONE-SIXTEENTH the cost of the utterly useless and actually highly damaging (not just opportunity costs or physical damage, but human damage, to Iraqis and American soldiers alike) Iraqi war.

And fixing the bridges is only a tiny bit of what we need to do: Revamping our energy sources, upgrading other infrastructure, especially passenger and freight rail lines, and much, much more.

Democrats and progressives pushing this argument can keep and should keep it very simple: Make every bridge in America safe, for pennies on the dollar of what we were forced to spend in Iraq. Take care of America's needs first.

Oh, and the corollary will be this: None of that GOP bullsh*t about having to make cuts elsewhere in the budget to pay for bridge repairs. Hey, they put the entire $2 trillion cost of Iraq into the national debt, and now blame Obama for it. More BS. We can afford this and we must do it. And it will pay handsome dividends. Jobs! Safer transportation!

Seeing as how it will cost us a lot more to wait until they all become disaster sites.

PLUS--the Federal and State governments all get a rebate anyway in the form of income, payroll and other taxes that all participants in the repair work will be paying anyway. A goodly portion of that money will funnel right back in to the economy.

It's a win-win situation, which is probably why Republicans are so dead-set against it.

this is one area that there could be bipartisanship, if we were (as Americans) willing to work together.

I'm in the business. Of the 15 to 20 major contractors I can name off the top of my head, keeping federal and state funding for transportation is the main goal of the PAC's no matter the leaders political leanings.

When the recession hit, transportation construction never stopped. It may have slowed, but never stopped. We kept bidding on repairing those roads and bridges, building new roads and bridges, design/build projects, every 6 weeks. Both state and federal jobs.

The owners of my company are Republicans. And, lots of democrats like me work for them. Same for all major companies I can think of. A mixture. They all work together much, much better than the Dems and Repubs in Congress.

Yes, more money is needed and that's where we could all work together to get something good done.

but Republican politicians just want to things, keeping the top income tax rate down, and making sure Obama can never be credited with anything good.
Bipartisanship among the voters, maybe. In Washington, no chance.
Something those Republican business people will refuse to see.

14. Shouldn't even be a question. Are we "proud"
Tue Jun 17, 2014, 07:50 PM

of our country, or not? Seems like the people who talk about that the most see it as a reason to bomb or execute or sneer at people.

We maybe ought to clean up our own house first. Bridges would be a good first step.

Then the roads.

And the schools.

Shoot, maybe we could build ourselves some of those fancy trains like they have in all those "unexceptional" countries like France, China, and Japan. Some of that "massive investment in renewable energy" those Germans are working on.
