The Social Security Administration has been closing a record number of field offices because of budget constraints even as the demand for services soars, according to a congressional report being released on Wednesday.
As a result, seniors seeking information and help from the agency are facing increasingly long waits, in person and on the phone, the report said.
Social Security has closed 64 field offices since 2010, the largest number of closures in a five-year period in the agency's history, the bipartisan staff of the Senate Aging Committee said in its report. In addition, the agency has closed 533 temporary mobile offices that often serve remote areas.
Hours have been reduced in the 1,245 field offices that are still open, the report said.

I can hear the Cheerfully Uninformed Party applauding this story.

(15,189 posts)Just think how much "we" all save. So when we're rich some day, we won't have our taxes raised over offices for the takers.

(54,770 posts)You can sign up for Medicare, SS, get answers to common questions, etc. You don't even have to mail in applications.
But I'm sure they are closing local offices faster than people are taking advantage of internet capabilities.

(53,661 posts)The last time I was at the Social Security office there were many people there who were not online due to language or other confusions.
Despite the demographics of those online, llke DU who think everyone is, there are groups who get little done online, due to techical or financial constaints.
The demographic that these offices serve the most need face to face contact. This is the GOP way of hurting them and denying them benefits.

(32,017 posts)the folks responsible for closing these offices will next claim that SS "doesn't work" and needs to be privatized. See: schools, post offices etc ...

(5,178 posts)Those of us in the background. Who see retirement years away. We can wonder what will be left of SS and any other support mechanisms as the climate change they so happily and ignorantly contributed too leaves us struggling to survive in the free market aftermath they are leaving us.
As we watch our world go under, we can thank those who couldn't be bothered to have a shred of social responsibility.
