China dog-eaters dodge activists with early feast

BEIJING (AP) -- Residents in a southern Chinese city that has come under fire for an annual summer solstice festival in which thousands of dogs are slaughtered for food have held their feasts early to avoid attention.

Some residents of Yulin started gathering last weekend and eating dog meat and lychees to celebrate the longest day of the year, ahead of Saturday's actual solstice, state media reported this week. The residents wanted to avoid protests by animal rights activists.

In recent years, the festival has been targeted by activists who have drummed up public awareness of the event with posts on social media and online petitions, and descended on the city to protest outside slaughterhouses or markets where the dogs are sold.

The public uproar reflects the increasing affluence of ordinary Chinese, who keep pets, travel overseas and are changing attitudes toward traditions they may not have questioned before.

I know I will get slammed for my opinion, "tradition" being prized among so many who coddle cultures that linger in the past, with people with actual hearts being considered the evil "affluent". But dog eaters can burn in hell, if there is one, among others who practice various, repulsive, "traditions". I know I know I will be considered uncouth, idiotic, hypocritical, despicable, ect... BUT I DON'T CARE! FUCK THESE PEOPLE WHO HARM DOGS IN ANY WAY ANYWHERE THEY ARE, JUST FUCK THEM!

My tag line should have me covered. I am not a "good liberal" (aka lemming), and I don't intend to be.

It is kind of arbitrary what we decide is worthy of eating and what isn't, right? Why are Dogs more deserving of not being eaten than Pigs?

Social mores are by their very nature, arbitrary.

Adults are not allowed by law to date children, an imaginary red and blue line on a piece of paper divides Canada from the U.S., driving zoned at 65mph on a particular highway rather than 66mph on that same particular highway -- and many other examples of an arbitrary social more exist all around us.

It's stuff like this that gets the rest of the world to hate us, we stick our nose into their culture and then tell them how to live based on our own arbitrary morals. If you eat a lamb that is good but if you eat a dog that is bad, Tuna is good while Whale is bad and on down the line.

Whales are highly intelligent animals with defined family structures whereas tuna fish do not. It's a false equivalency.

And also, beyond that, it's not just westerners (whatever that really means anymore) who are against whale slaughter.
