How much of their profit comes from merchandise sales (only a small portion of which would be lost)?

And large amounts of those millions would be flushed down the toilets and given to bootleg merchandisers who'd be able to use the Slurs imagery freely.

If the PTO's decision stands, the money people will demand the name be changed from the Washington Slurs.

They are by some measures the most profitable sports franchise in the world. "Millions" is relative.

I don't know how large a hit it would be... most such pirate sales would take place outside of the most common channels (the NFL wouldn't allow a store to sell NFL merchandise if they also sell knock-off).

I'd guess there will still be a rather strong market among Washington fans (and random collectors of such things) for the "vintage" stuff.

Funny thins is the Redskins had a spear on their helmets in the 60's. Lombardi changed it to the R and Allen changed it to the current image.

Nothing came of it due to appeal.

The only chance is if the NFL doesn't back Washington on appeal.

The team will almost certainly appeal the case, and it will be able to keep its trademark protection during appeal. Losing the trademark would not force the team to change its name, but it would allow anyone who wanted to use “Redskins” on merchandise or through other means to do so, which could cost the team — and, because of the NFL’s revenue-sharing model, other NFL teams — “every imaginable loss you can think of,” as the team’s lawyers argued in the original case. For that reason, the trademark has long been thought of by opponents of the team’s name as the easiest avenue to changing it.

If they lose the appeal, then they suddenly have a change of heart and re-evaluate their position. When, in fact, it will be the almighty dollar that changes things.
