If the FSU Seminoles were forced to change their name, *then* one might claim it is "PC run amok"

However, there is no Native American tribe named the "Redskins."

"Redskins" is not some honorable trait that could be attributed to Native Americans like "Braves" or "Warriors".

"Redskins" isn't even an antiquated but otherwise non-offensive misnomer like "Indians."

It's a slur.

Stop whining and moaning about how you claim politically correctness is supposedly ruining society and change the damn name already.

They get approval from the Seminole tribe so it gets a pass. But let's not pretend it isn't similar.

Seminoles is a recognized Native American tribe. "Redskins" isn't.

The Atlanta Braves used to have a mascot named Chief Noc-a-Homa. It was eventually discontinued. But the name "Braves" itself isn't in the least offensive against Native Americans.

The Cleveland Indians' mascot Chief Wahoo is arguably an offensive caricature. The Indians name, while a bit old fashioned, really can't be viewed as that offensive.

Mascots can be changed easily. To change the name of the team itself takes a little more willpower. However, in the case of the Redskins, it ought to be done.

Seminole Tribe.

The original idea for Chief Osceola and Renegade was envisioned by Bill Durham, a Florida State sophomore, in 1962. His idea went nowhere until 1977 when the football team's head coach, Bobby Bowden, heard of the idea.

Durham gained the approval of the Seminole tribe of Florida and at the opening football game in 1978, against Oklahoma State University, Chief Osceola and Renegade made their first appearance. The original Renegade was donated by Tallahassee, Florida veterinarian Dr. Jerry Deloney, and since then the horses and riders have been trained by local Tallahassee businessman Bill Durham and his sons who have completely funded the tradition.

Despite the objection of certain Native Americans throughout the United States, Florida State and the Seminoles of Florida maintain a close relationship, with one of the tribes of Seminoles resolving to allow the university to continue to use its name as a symbol of the school. The authentic regalia worn by Chief Osceola and Renegade is designed by women of the Seminole tribe each year.

No one is going to sue them. The Seminole name is not offensive. "Redskins", however, is.
