From the DU Archives in the 1930's. The more things change.......

Last edited Wed Jun 18, 2014, 03:54 PM - Edit history (1)

Inspired by Armstead's wonderful post.

Yes, I know, DU didn't exist in the 1930's. But it doesn't take a great leap of imagination to envision what it would have been like if it had. (And yes, this is an admittedly biased view from someone who tends to believe that the Democratic party has always had to fight off revisionists and purists from the left)

So, let's hop into the DeLorean and set the controls for sometime in the mid-1930s

--------------

Poster A: Roosevelt is definitively a friend of the bankers. He needs to watch himself or we'll draft Huey Long to run against him.
Poster B: Hey, look, we're not a socialist or communist country. The President has to work within the system to bring about the changes we need.
Poster A: I can't believe you're playing the red-card! The New Deal is a government of the bankers, by the bankers, and for the bankers.*
Poster B: So you don't believe these new laws are helpful?
Poster A: All I know is the New Deal is a sell out to Wall Street! Roosevelt has been using the rich resources of his political talents to preserve the capitalist system intact and he has resisted in every possible way any attempt to make any breaches in the shaky walls of that system!

---- Poster C wanders into the conversation ----

Poster C: Is not this trickery the hallmark of this Wall Street tool, this President who always stabs in the back while he embraces? How unctuous is his empty solicitude for the ragged, hungry children...with the ruthlessness of a devoted Wall Street lackey spending billions for war and profits and trampling on the faces of the poor.
Poster B: Oh come on, you've got to be kidding!
:This post has been hidden by Jury Decision:
Poster B: Seriously, I'm a DINO? you're going to start name-calling?
Poster A: No, sir! You started name calling when you used played the red card!
Poster B: No, I correctly stated we are not a socialist or communist country. How was that name calling?
:This post has been hidden by Jury Decision:
Poster C: I'm a John Dewey Democrat! He speaks for me when he said Roosevelt's effort shows a commendable bias toward a 'controlled and humanized capitalism' against the brutality of laissez-faire, but the necessary conclusion seems to be that no such compromise with a decaying system is possible."
Poster B: Capitalism needs to be better regulated so...
Poster C: FUCK that! Either the nation must put up with the confusions and miseries of an essentially unregulated capitalism, or it must prepare to supersede capitalism with socialist. There is no longer a middle course!
Poster A: Banks have not been nationalized, nor the railways taken over by the Government. Not a single instrumentality of economic power has been wrested from the party of big business.
Poster B: Sigh... remember when we were all united against Hoover in the 20s?

---------------

The scary part? Most of what Posters A&C said are real quotes from liberals in the 1930s.

In the near future a woman will be born and we can lay all the blame on her for what is happening now.

Seriously, that would not surprise me in the least.

15. you remind me of something Rex Tugwell said...
Wed Jun 18, 2014, 03:59 PM
Jun 2014

Rex Tugwell was one of, if not THE the most liberal members of FDR's administration:

"They complain incessantly that the administration is moving into the conservative camp, but do nothing to keep it from going there. The progressive mind is stratified with dogmatism of the most appalling kind...The progressive theme-song is 'I'll tell you about my panacea but you must not tell me about your panacea.' ... They are like Chinese warriors who decide battles, not by fighting, but by desertion...They rush to the aid of any liberal victor, and then proceed to stab him in the back when he fails to perform the mental impossibility of subscribing unconditionally to their dozen or more conflicting principles."

It's amazing how radically conservatives have changed while liberals have stayed much the same in many ways.

who once said:

""The ups and downs in peoples’ feelings, particularly on the liberal side, are an old, old story. The liberals always get discouraged when they do not see the measures they are interested in go through immediately. Considering the time we have had to work in the past for almost every slight improvement, I should think they might get over with it, but they never do."

It's always cute and sometimes funny when someone comes up with an original idea for a post. But when there are a bunch of copycats trying to deflect on the point from the original, then it just gets sad.
