According to an investigative report from Al Jazeera America, rape victims searching for help at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., were told to repent and seek out their own root sin that caused them to be raped.
Within the past year BJU has opened its own investigation into sexual abuse and rape, and now former students who were victimized are coming forward to tell their stories about life on a campus where they were shamed and told to keep their stories to themselves.
Coming from a conservative Mennonite family, Katie Landry, who at age 19 had never even held hands with a boy, was raped multiple times by her supervisor at her summer job. Two years later, haunted by the attacks, and attending Bob Jones University, she sought help from then dean of students, Jim Berg.
According to Landry, Berg asked whether shed been drinking or smoking pot and if she had been impure. He then brought up her root sin.
He goes, Well, theres always a sin under other sin. Theres a root sin, Landry explained. And he said, We have to find the sin in your life that caused your rape. And I just ran.
He just confirmed my worst nightmare, she added. It was something I had done. It was something about me. It was my fault.
Dean of Students, Jim Berg: This is what a hypocritical 'CHRISTIAN' ass hat looks like.

(14,733 posts)Oh yeah, in third world countries, where they then seal the deal by murdering the woman who was raped, since it was 'her fault'.
The root sin was sitting right in front of her. Patriarchical asses who convince men and women alike that being raped is the woman's fault, and thus grant free passes for male rapists who listen to the filth they peddle.

(6,324 posts)You can't go out in downtown Greenville on a BJU "student" screaming on the corner about how everyone walking by is going to hell.
One night in the 90's I was yelled at for my"promiscuous" dress and told if I "got pregnant with a mongrel chill from my fornication I better not murder it" or something close.
I made sure I sinned extra that night.

(291 posts)BTK aka Dennis Rader was a deacon at a local Lutheran church. He is the local serial killer, killed them then masturbated on their body. He even went as far as taking pictures of them on the church grounds at night. I started thinking about that a few days ago when I drove past the Lutheran church he went to. They were in total shock. I was at the local grocery store the next morning after they caught him, you could have heard a pin drop-they didn't see it coming. Yes perverts hide out at church, yes they do.

(5,106 posts)resort. At breakfast, we sat next to a table of very clean-cut kids. They told their server that they were from Bob Jones University, working there for the summer, and said a blessing when they were served. They then proceeded to make the most ignorant and racist remarks I'd ever heard about people passing on the boardwalk outside. We were so stunned that we were speechless. I've never forgotten that experience to this day, even knowing the fault was with the individuals, rather than the school.

Patrick Henry College officials respond, refute New Republic story
Patrick Henry College officials respond, refute New Republic story
Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 by Trevor Baratko
Officials at Patrick Henry College, the small, deeply-religious Christian school in Purcellville, responded to and repudiated Wednesday a longform report in the New Republic that accused the Patrick Henry administration of victim-blaming females in the cases of rape.
The New Republic story, entitled Rape at God's Harvard and published online Monday, highlights accounts from several female former students who reported assaults during their time at the school.
other female students who say they reported sexual assault or harassment to the administration also left feeling that school officials blamed them instead of holding the accused male students accountable," the story, written by Kiera Feldman, notes. "The administration, they say, seemed much more concerned with protecting Patrick Henrys pristine public image.
In the school's response, sent to students, PHC officials stated: Because you have invested your hearts, minds, and resources in this College, you should know that Patrick Henry College is absolutely committed to the protection and care of our students, male and female equally. When and if issues arise, we take each allegation seriously and try to conduct appropriate investigations with a spirit of emotional support while seeking truth. We may not perfectly achieve this objective every time, but this is our aim; this is our heart. The thesis of the article, that women are somehow treated less favorably than men, especially in difficult situations involving physical interactions between a male and female student, is categorically false.

(11,084 posts)Are they saying they protect rapists and rape victims equally? Seems like you might want a little inequality when it comes to the assaulter and the assaulted.
Or are they saying male rape victims get equal treatment to female rape victims? That's really hard to believe.

And I'm like "protection from what?". To which they responded "you know what.". Seriously it was an hour and a half car ride. If you can't control your impulses for that long seek professional help.
