I received a scam phone call that appeared to be from a Washington DC number today. They said because I 'paid my taxes on time', and 'hadn't filed for bankruptcy in the last 6 months', I was eligible for a free government grant that I did not have to pay back. Yippee!! All they wanted was my bank account number, or a credit card number so they could send me the funds. I suggested that they just send me a prepaid Visa card instead (yeah, right). The person who called had a thick accent like she might be from India, and the phone call was glitchy. The number that called was 202-210-0054. I filed a complaint with the FTC after the call. Apparently this was on the news, but I didn't catch it this morning. They called my cell number and my wife's too. You might want to look after anyone that you know or love that might fall for something like this.

(2,860 posts)That's good advice too. I do that for other things, but I knew right away that this was a scam. The people posting on your link are telling the exact same story that I did. At least the FTC has the number now too. My phone told me it was from Washington DC, but the call was obviously foreign.

(14,449 posts)When I was unemployed and DESPERATE, I was searching a job on Craig's List and I applied to one of the Admin Assistant jobs. After back and forth e-mail, I received a 5,000 dollar check in the mail (overnight service no less)....well of course my job was to cash it, keep 800 dollars and then send the rest back by my check.....well of course telling my friends about this incredible job they told me to stop being in the clouds...it is a scam. Looking at the check, I found it interesting that the bank was the bank right down the road from where I lived. I took the check to the bank and they looked up the account and saw that it was an ACTIVE account, but the signature was fraudulent. So anyway, I gave up the check and fake job and went on my way. I always wondered if I had cashed the check being that it was on an active account if I would have 5,000 dollars.....well why risk it and it actually is stealing anyway I guess......

(2,860 posts)Whoever wrote it would have tried to raid your account and wipe you out. That happened to a server that works at the same restaurant as my wife. The server received a check for $10,000, and rushed to the bank and deposited it. Her account was wiped out right after that. I know what unemployed and desperate is like. I just got over 6 months of unemployment. I'm thankfully back to work now. Good luck to you!

(9,760 posts)company pretending they're AT&T. The messages are loud and in that obnoxious radio/sports caster voice that people inexplicably seem to like. I would block them, but each call is from a different number. I called Credo mobile to ask if they could do something. They said they couldn't, but that I can just delete the messages.
Well, that's my point. I don't want to have to have to do anything related to these scammers. I don't want to have to listen to the message to find out it's them. I don't want to have to delete the message. I don't want to hear my phone ring and have to check to see who's calling because some sleazebags are trying to sell me some lies. I want them to stop calling me. Ugh!
