You've managed to make me feel as welcome as Pete Chilcutt walking into a Visart.

specifically says it is NOT acceptable to do so.
I don't alert on posts, but if I were someone who did alert on posts, I would have alerted on yours for calling him a dumbass; and if I had been on a jury for that post (that is, if someone had alerted on it), I would have voted to hide it as a personal attack.
In general, even on juries, I am inclined to leave posts alone, because I am all for spirited debate. But nasty name-calling is not spirited debate, and I will typically vote to hide a post that calls someone an insulting name.
I realize that you are a highly respected member here, and obviously you work tirelessly for the progressive cause with your writing. But I do think you often step over the line with name-calling.

(30,151 posts)dumbass is kind of middle school-ish-
Now,
calling someone a dumbs...
Yo, you are such a dumbs! has a nice salty ring to it!
tblue37
(65,227 posts)and I don't always catch the substitution before posting. In fact, even as I typed my subject line, I caught my autocorrect trying to turn "always" into "laws," and it also tried to turn "even" into "den."
The word I intended was "dumbass," but even as I tried to type this sentence, autocorrect turned it into "dumbs"--twice!
WP had called taterguy a dumbs, and I was objecting to the nasty name-calling.
With respect to the word substitutions--I think autocorrect is morphing into Skynet.

(7,581 posts)Your comment had no purpose but to hurt the OP and try to make yourself look oh-so-cool and oh-so-clever. It should be alerted upon.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,271 posts)Your reference to a juror couldn't be tied to any jury that had happened, so it was obviously a joke. And the second alert on you must have been malicious. 2 bad juries.

(101,271 posts)They were both some of the worst hides, 'in my opinion', I've seen; and I think the vast majority of DUers would agree. They might have been locked by hosts for being pointless 'meta' threads, or part of some joke that should be in the Lounge, but there was nothing there to offend anyone.

(22,271 posts)There are days I feel like all of DU hates my guts. But then I remember this is only a message board and I really don't give a shit what a few vocal keyboard warriors think about me. What matters is what *I* think about me and *I* think I'm simply fabulous so joke 'em if they can't take a fuck.

(23,156 posts)What is a Visart?
Clearly I am missing something here.
taterguy
(29,582 posts)Visart is a place that didn't welcome Pete Chilcutt.
Understand now?

(23,156 posts)That doesn't make any sort of sense.

Likewise I have never heard of Peter whatshisname. Is he a real person? A fictional one?

(29,582 posts)As is your lack of knowledge of video stores in Carrboro.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Using Wikipedia, duckduckgo, the hint taterguy dropped, and what I know from having lived in the area:
Pete Chilcutt was a professional basketball player. Although taterguy considers him forgettable, he did play on the Houston Rockets team that won the NBA championship for the 1994-95 season. He has a championship ring, a bauble that many undeniably unforgettable players lack.
He played his college ball at UNC-Chapel Hill. Visart was a small chain of video stores in North Carolina. One of their stores was in Carrboro, the next town over from Chapel Hill, although it closed a few years ago. The store, that is, not the town.
We may speculate that, when Chilcutt was a callow collegian, there was some sort of incident at the store that generated ill will. Chilcutt may have been at fault. Alternatively, he may have been wrongfully blamed when, for example, an argument about Kurosawa got a little too heated and some inebriated patron took a swing at him.
After retiring from the NBA, Chilcutt became a sixth-grade math and science teacher in California. Teachers have it tough enough these days, so let us not pry too deeply into what may have happened on that dark day in Carrboro.
