Well, he wasn't testifying on invading Canada, but some Republican asked him about it.
Wednesdays hearing of the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee was informative on a great many serious subjects. It also revealed that the United States isnt prepared to take aggressive action against its looming menace to the north, according to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Dan Coats, R-Ind., was asking about how prepared the military was to act in Iraq. Based on my previous service in the Senate and some service now, Im totally aware that the Pentagon has a contingency plan on the shelf for just about every possible scenario, everything from nuclear war to an invasion by Canada, and everything in between, he said, per the transcript by CQ.com.
Answered Gen. Martin E. Dempsey:
Let me first assure you we do not have a plan on the shelf for the invasion of Canada. I want to make sure that our Canadian allies, who may be watching

(81,839 posts)Coates said "invasion by Canada." Dempsey said "invasion of Canada."
Setting that aside, invading Canada shouldn't be out of the question. It's past time to take back Canada from the Queen.

(154,021 posts)we do have plans for any eventuality, including invading Canada. It is the wargame plans.
And I mean that.
We have had those on the shelf for a long time. They get revised every so often as well. Now the chances of us actually invading Canada in this reality at this time are anywhere from zero to zip to nada

(25,704 posts)It is a function of geeking out, like trying to determine the true top speed of the Millenium Falcon or the various re-litigating of the Battle of Jutland. If my job, which they paid me for, was an exquisitely precise plan of invading Canada, I woukd take years and by the end I would be shouting about the Canuck menace from the rooftops.

(154,021 posts)on the bright side, our counterparts have a poor Colonel doing the same at Staff War College.
I remember talking about that in College with a Military Historian, who before he got his PhD, and his tenure was one of those poor shmuck. In his War College Course he got to plan, or rather revise, the Invasion of Mexico. The plan has not changed much since the last time we did actually invaded Mexico. Some of his pals got to do Guatemala, and Canada.
It is what if exercises. As he put it, they just change the designator, they dust them, they revise them here and there, and shelve then again for another class to play with. It's not like anybody takes them too seriously.
