The Secret Life of B’s

And by “B’s” we mean Billionaires.
The billionaire brothers Koch are on the receiving end (finally) of some serious media attention and political outrage as the result of a recent spate of anti-American activities.

In addition, a group of reporters recently infiltrated one of their super-secret top “one-percenters” summits and the results were, let’s say, illuminating.
The dynastic duo has formed a Super PAC (aren’t they one already?) aimed at securing the coming midterm elections for their pet Republican candidates. Their latest scheme involves targeting Hispanics and Latinos to urge them to vote for the same cadre of pasty white men that will, in turn, propose immigration legislation to have them deported, pay them unfair wages, prevent their family members from immigrating, and deny them government benefits. Sadly, they have the deep pockets required to blur the lines and place these candidates in office, as The Daily Beast explains:

The Koch Brothers are on a mission to make people other than older white men vote for Republicans. Although they’ve already spent tens of millions on political races this year, they are devoting $300 million to target specific groups, including Latinos and the young. The programs they’ve backed include Concerned Veterans for America, which is currently running the “Defend Freedom Summer Tour” rock concert series. The Koch Brothers are also supporting the Libre Initiative, a group devoted to convincing Latinos that Obama’s healthcare reform will harm them, and Generation Opportunity, which targets 18-to-34-year-olds through college campuses and social media campaigns.



A summer concert tour? What will they call it, Propagandapalooza? Their twisted machinations to convince younger/minority voters that access to affordable health care is bad for them is evil enough, but it doesn’t end there. The Super PAC, called “Freedom Partners Action Fund” exemplifies the dangers of the recent Supreme Court/ McCutcheon decision which equates free speech with money and – along with Citizens United – hammered the final nail in the coffin of our expectation and Constitjutiomnal guarantee of free and fair elections. The Christian Science Monitor explains it this way:
The Midwestern industrialists Charles and David Koch already have a history of massive giving to political candidates and groups. The Koch-founded group Freedom Partners fund, for example, a 501(c)(6) business group, raises lots of money and donates to a range of affiliated or allied groups engaged in politics.

That Freedom Partners fund, however, is limited by rules governing its tax-exempt status. It can’t spend the bulk of its money trying to get candidates elected or voted out of office. The new super PAC doesn’t face that restriction.

“It can spend 100 percent of its money on politics,” says Bill Allison, editorial director at the Sunlight Foundation in Washington, which tracks the role of money in elections. And where an individual can only give $2,600 to a candidate, the Kochs and others face no cap on giving to the independent super PAC.
See how this works? The billionaires dump their deep pockets into the campaign of their chosen puppet and, poof! Off to Capitol Hill to carry out the Koch’s legislative agenda. Our electoral process has become like a grocery trip for the ultra-wealthy: . . . let’s see, I’ll pick up a pound of salmon filets, a bottle of Perrier, the 17th District in Maryland, a nice pinot noir . . . .

Here’s where the fun begins. A group of reporters successfully infiltrated the most recent secret planning session of Koch and company super-villians, must’ve been like breaking into Bruce Wayne’s Bat Cave – with real bats. Lauren Windsor, writing for The Nation, has this exclusive:
Charles and David Koch wrapped up their annual summer seminar on June 16 in Dana Point, California, at the St. Regis Monarch Bay resort—a fitting location for two men whose combined net worth is more than $100 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The highly secretive mega-donor conference, called “American Courage: Our Commitment to a Free Society,” featured a who’s who of Republican political elites. According to conference documents obtained through a source who was in attendance, Representatives Tom Cotton (AR), Cory Gardner (CO) and Jim Jordan (OH) were present, as were Senators Mitch McConnell (KY) and Marco Rubio (FL). Cotton, Gardner and McConnell are all running for the Senate this year; Jordan for re-election in the House. Rubio is widely considered a major contender for a 2016 presidential run. According to the documents, the conference attendees discussed strategy on campaign finance, climate change, healthcare, higher education and opportunities for taking control of the Senate. According to another source who also attended the conference, 300 individuals—worth at least a billion each—were present. This source said that the explicit goal was to raise $500 million to take the Senate in the 2014 midterms and another $500 million “to make sure Hillary Clinton is never president.”
