An impassioned Sen. Elizabeth Warren appeared on MSNBCs Hardball and made a strong case for fighting to rebuild the middle class through investments in jobs and infrastructure while at times butting heads with host Chris Matthews over the Democratic Partys efforts.
Promoting her new memoir, A Fighting Chance, Warren was challenged by Matthews to explain how Democrats could give Americans real hope for a future with meaningful familiy-building employment that seems to be gone in so much of the country.
Well, you know, this isnt magic, she replied. We actually know how to do this. We did this for nearly half a century, coming out of the great depression until about 1980. We made the investments together that helped build opportunity for all of us.
Starting with education, she talked about her own opportunities growing up poor and attending a local commuter college.
I went to a commuter college that cost fifty dollars a semester, she remembered. It opened a million doors for me. How could I go to a school that cost fifty dollars a semester? Because I grew up in a America that said, we collectively, all of us, are going to make those investments in education so that any kid, who works hard, who plays the rules, who tries to get out there and make something of herself, is going to have a fighting chance to make that happen.
Saying that we spent years investing in education, research, and infrastructure that built a robust economy, Warren laid the blame for Americas current woes on Republican trickle down policies of the 1980?s.

(18,402 posts)Remember Obama's Jobs Bill? It had much of what we needed to create jobs, including investing in education, research, and infrastructure. It was a freaking mantra for his first four years.
But try getting Congressional Republicans in the House or Senate to vote for it. They'd vote against saving their own grandmothers if Obama (or any other Democrat) proposed it. It really would take magic to actually get jobs legislation and policies put in place in this climate.
And about that 80s "trickle down" stuff. Yeah, I remember that, Elizabeth. I was out there fighting against it, and voting against the party that promoted those ideas. Nuff said.

Sometimes government is the answer. The only answer.
Reagan wasn't right about one fucking thing. Can we stop pretending as a nation that Reagan was right? That is like pretending Cheney will give us valuable advice on Iraq.

(904 posts)I really like Elizabeth Warren. Sometimes when I hear certain other prominent democrats talk, I hear carefully crafted arguments, but I feel they are lacking something, as if they could just as well debate for the other side. Maybe it's the fact that many of them came from money and they are pretty cozy with certain corporate interests. Elizabeth Warren comes from a different place; she has the passion, enthusiasm, and the courage of her convictions. She is the real deal.
