I was convinced had McCain won the 2000 Republican Primary, and the election, he would have been at least competent enough to not run the country into the ground. I saw him similar to Bob Dole. If he won, the status quo at the time would've remained.
It's clear McCain would have been an equal, if not worse, disaster than Bush. If he had won in 2008, this country would still be at war with Iraq, probably involved in Iran and Syria and with no plans to leave Afghanistan.
The man is dangerous. The fact he was able to con so many people into believing he was competent and capable is scary. I have an excuse for me being duped - I was very young at the time (not even old enough to vote in '00 or '04). No one in the media has that excuse, though. But we dodged a bullet. A huge bullet.
The fact McCain actually came so close to the presidency, and Palin the vice presidency, is pretty much a devastating critique on our country.

Having said that the greatest hoax played on the American People was the B.S. about McCain being a "straight talker" he's nothing but the lowest of politicians willing to turn on a dime in regards to selling out his integrity.
Palin would give Bush a strong running as for incompetence but she wouldn't have been President.
Thanks for the thread, Drunken Irishman.
