There are plenty of jobs to be had.

We can start by Congress passing a jobs program to fix our failing infrastructure. We have roads and bridges all over America that are falling apart due to neglect or little fixes here and there. There are also underground pipes for water and sewage that badly need replaced. There are plenty of old power lines and gas lines that need replaced. The jobs are there if Congress just gets off their obstructionist asses and passes a jobs bill to get people fixing infrastructure. We are going to see some really bad times if something isn't done to fix failing infrastructure. These things aren't going to fix themselves we need people to do it and we need Congress to pass a jobs bill to help get it done.

1. Uh, yea - we tried this already. American Recovery Act, 2009? Ringing any bells?

Yes, 'failing infrastructure' was one of the selling points.
$47 billion for transportation projects, including $27 billion for highway and bridge construction and repair and $12 billion for mass transit, including $7.5 billion to buy transit equipment such as buses; and $31 billion to build and repair federal buildings and other public infrastructures.
This wasn't the only source of govt infrastructure funds, which is over 100 billion spent in last 7 years. If things are as bad as you say, then the people have a right to know what happened to the hundred billion dollars.

The fact is, we are broke. Worse, actually, in debt. Cannot afford to go deeper in debt when we have nothing to show after the 2009 over 800 billion Act.
What we need is corporations to bring their money back. From overseas.
Okay, I won't say 'evil corporations' - but what else can you call them when our people are jobless while they sit on money to avoid taxes?

3. Here are some of my ideas for good government jobs

I believe we should have government advocate jobs to help other people in need of help.
People are well trained and supervised.
It would be a job of prestige and community service.
Advocates would be assigned to:
Help the elderly stay in their own homes rather than nursing homes.
Advocates for the homeless to help them find a better place.
Advocates for medical assistance for the elderly and the poor - taking them to the doctor, helping them with basic issues to assure they get better care.
Advocates for children (like CASA).
The list can go on.

Restore science and natural resources-related jobs. They've been decimated by this "austerity" bullshit. Thousands of state, local and federal employees who work for such agencies as the Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS, NASA, the Forest Service, the CDC, the NIH, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, etc., and various state regulatory and natural resource agencies have lost their jobs because of budget cuts. The same goes for university research positions. Funding for research and development has been slashed to the bone. I know that from experience. I lost my research job years ago, and I'm still looking. There's literally nothing out there for me.

They won't do it! What we need is a new congress.
Slim chance, but I won't give up hope...

6. The problem with infrastructure jobs

Is they are like construction jobs, they are all temporary. It's basically contract work, it lasts six months then it's gone and the people awarded the contract make all the profit.

I've been lucky to have two different government jobs with pensions, we need more of those to sustain a long term recovery.

That's the exact argument against te keystone pipeline, it doesn't create many permanent jobs, just temporary construction jobs. All construction jobs are temporary.
