This IS foreign policy: Obama pushes for TPP deal by November

U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday he hopes to have an agreement on framing a vast pan-Pacific trading block by the time he makes his next visit to Asia in November.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership would encompass 40 percent of the global economy and include 12 nations. Talks on setting up the pact have been delayed by intricate market access negotiations between Japan and the United States.

Obama said he discussed the latest timeline for the deal with New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key in the Oval Office, and that he hoped to have a related “document” by the end of the year.

“My hope is that by the time we see each other again in November, when I travel to Asia, we have got something that we have consulted with Congress about, that the public can take a look at,” Obama said, though he warned there was a lot of work still to be done on an agreement.

it now,

The real agenda is the TPP and continued corporate control and Pres Obama is doing EXACTLY what they are paying him to do, just like Bill Clinton, Just Like Dubya, Just like Dubya's Dad and Just like Rancid Ronnie and just like Hillary will do too.

They do not work for nor do they care about us, it is ALL smoke and mirrors designed to make people think they are living in a democratic and free society.

The unfortunate part is that it works and works quite well the lemmings are already lining up.

Democrats need big money from both Hollywood and BigAg in order to be competitive in November. If the President pushes their agenda for a bit (and the TPP is what Hollywood and BigAg want), he hopes to curry favor with them and get their support for the mid-term elections.

Personally, I have come to the conclusion that Obama is no great fan of the TPP. He has delayed and complicated its passage for years (even if he has always been supportive of the concept rhetorically). At this time, however, the party needs big money, and, as the party's leader, he's trying to secure it for us.

I expect to see a lot more talk about the TPP up until November, but I expect to see nothing come of all that talk. This time, I hope I am right.

She wants payback for her King Making powers for Obama.

Sadly, I wish you were correct...but, I think he's been delaying because he wants it done after the November Elections so that he will have his place in history to stand along with the ACA.

Just as Clinton supported deregulation/"modernization" of FDR Banking programs in his second term for his legacy and after gifting Wall Street and Telecoms he added Welfare Reform for the poor as his gift to the RW.

TPP isn't the only trade deal.. The others are ongoing and being crafted in secret. It will be a whole package and folks won't know what hit them until a few years along. Just as we didn't know how devastating for jobs NAFTA would turn out to be or the "Commodities Modernization Act" which lead to the Housing Bubble and Crash that followed causing our "Austerity" we're still dealing with. Deregulation of the FCC which has caused a few powerful Media Conglomerates to force their agenda on the public and lead to disparity in access to the Internet and Consistent Bandwidth availability for ALL of our citizens.

Obama may not be in full agreement with TPP but those who brought him to power and fund him want it...so they will get it. imho

Elections and Complete Campaign Finance Reform! Why this response you ask? Because TPP is a perfect example of the Plutocrats using the politicians they own (almost all of them) to enact something detrimental to the other 99% of us strictly for their financial benefit. It is something Americans in General do not want, but will be shoved down our throats anyway because they can! This is another of many reasons why we MUST fight to regain our Representative Democracy back. Please forgive that over-used phrase but it totally applies. Our politicians do not usually listen to us, only pretend to, because we are not as important to getting them elected. The Plutocrats with their almost unlimited wealth are the ones that guarantee they stay in office with their legal insider trading (another quid pro quo John Roberts)!
Until we change the dynamic by electing Representatives committed to passing these absolutely necessary reforms, we will be victimized again and again.
Who is with me?

18. TTP Expands Corporate Lawsuits Against Nations for Lost Profits
Sun Jun 22, 2014, 09:30 AM
Jun 2014

"Last year, a leaked chapter from the draft agreement outlined how the TPP would allow foreign corporations operating in the United States to appeal key regulations to an international tribunal. The body would have the power to override U.S. law and issue penalties for failure to comply with its rulings. Earlier leaks from the draft agreement exposed how it included rules that could increase the cost of medication and make participating countries adopt restrictive copyright measures."

JIM SHULTZ: Right. Well, it’s the Trans-Pacific Partnership. And this is part of this global web of trade agreements that are being negotiated, that have been negotiated over the last 30 years, that, you know, from the outsider, it could seem like it’s a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo, but really what’s at stake is democracy. The report that we just put out looked at a very troubling part of what these agreements involve, which are these special trade tribunals that are used by corporations to directly undermine the ability of citizen movements to influence their government.

You know, the famous case, of course, is the one from Bolivia, where Bechtel from San Francisco came in, privatized—took over the privatized water system, raised people’s rates up by more than 50 percent, was kicked out by a popular rebellion, and turned around on a $1 million investment and sued Bolivia for $50 million. These cases—there’s almost 500 a year now of these cases being filed all over the world. Philip Morris, the tobacco giant, is suing Uruguay for the sin of putting health warnings on their cigarettes. In El Salvador—

AMY GOODMAN: What do you mean?

JIM SHULTZ: So, Uruguay decided to put stiffer health warnings on cigarette packages. And Philip Morris doesn’t like that, so Philip Morris uses a bilateral investment treaty between Uruguay and Switzerland—so, Philip Morris somehow puts on a Swiss hat and pretends it’s a Swiss company—and is suing Uruguay for hundreds of millions of dollars. This is—this is everywhere.
