which he did with Brian Blessed, a British actor (in)famous for his swearing (here he is telling a story for the programme - warning - all swear words are used in this

There was a clip that included the pain experiment here, but it seems to have been taken down (or maybe that's just in the UK). Anyway, what they showed was that Blessed gets relatively little pain relief from swearing, while Fry, who doesn't swear so much normally, gets some more.

that whole 'necessary' argument with my dad. He hates swearing - funny enough he says those same things...people who swear do so because they don't have a good vocabulary and that swearing isn't necessary. He never swears. Ever. Growing up I wasn't even allowed to say dumb, stupid or darn. So, predictably, I swear like a sailor now, LOL. But I'm nearly 40 so he can't punish me like he used to, so now he rolls his eyes and says, "is that really necessary?" Now I can say that many things in life aren't necessary... but that's what makes life enjoyable, lol. BTW, my dad has the worst vocabulary. He doesn't read much, except for crappy right wing newspapers. He never 'understood' English classes ("They asked me my opinion and I gave it to them...'this story is bad' and I got a 0. How can they give an opinion a 0?&quot and can't write worth shit. I'm quite certain my vocabulary is much better than his, and I swear constantly

My favorite Fry line: The short answer is 'no.' The long answer is 'fuck no.'

If you want an enjoyable half an hour to marathon-won't-get-to-bed-tonight viewing, go to YouTube and search for "qi series a" ('qi' stands for 'Quite Interesting'). It is a sort of quiz show, but one where it is more important to be interesting than right. After series a, there's series b, then c, and you get the idea. Series j and k aren't up completely yet for those of us in the US.

YouTube also has scads of Fry & Laurie skits, that are hilarious. I've been watching Jeeves and Wooster lately. I wish that Fry was better known on this side of the pond.
