A some point there has to be a correction of the DU system...we see these alerts that get unanimous or near unanimous jury Leaves and it has to raise a red flag. I wonder if this has been raised in ATA...

(28,182 posts)Censorship is excessive here, as we can see on this thread.
I was on a jury over a week ago when someone posted an innocent quote on a religious thread. A quote that incited thought and reflection. That was jumped on quickly and was hidden by a 4-3 vote. I posted a few comments on a religious thread and I just waiting for them to be taken down for the same reasons - I upset someone, though they were moderately intellectual and on topic.
I chose my posts to reply to because there are certain members who seem to have taken on the role of "Team DU - World Police."
Replying to certain topics will almost certainly gain the wrath of those who don't want challenging thoughts. As such, I do not participate here as much as I would like.
There aren't a lot of members here who seem to act like Mrs. Kravitz from the TV series Bewitched, but it just takes a few. They will complain about some post, write up a halfway believable reason why the post was hurtful and, if a majority of the jurists lean their way... they WIN!
===
I'm a EFF supporter and, while I might not like a post, I would not consider flaging others unless something egregious were written.
I know of at least a half dozen members who should have their flagging privileges suspended for a while. It baffles me that they are allowed to censor, unless they were given some carte blanche approval to do so. There should be a cap of 5 flags a month, no more.

(6,261 posts)Germany will win the group and the US will finish in second place no matter what happens in the other game.
Hard to see that game finish anything other than a draw, really.
Great game, though, for the US!
redqueen
(115,103 posts)Our confidence should be good going in so that's a plus. Still though, it's Germany.
BainsBane
(53,029 posts)Portugal and Ghana have each lost one, so if we lose to Germany it goes to numbers of goals?
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)...The US will advance regardless (4 pts vs 2 pts). Portugal have a maximum of 4 points, which the US already have, in which case it would come down to goal difference if they beat Ghana and the US loses. Remember Portugal have a terrible goal difference.
If Portugal beats Ghana by anything but a huge margin, the US would advance even with a small loss to Germany. A big Ghana victory against Portugal would be the worst thing that could happen, but even then a draw will suffice for the US (and Germany would win the group)
BainsBane
(53,029 posts)I appreciate your knowledge. I started watching soccer when I lived in Brazil, basically because I had to. Yet I only finally figured out how off-side works the other day, so I'm not exactly well-versed in the sport. Still, I like it better than other team sports.
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)One of the fascinating things about this sport is the endless permutations of possible results and the dependencies on what happens in other games.
This sport has the smallest margins between ecstasy and despair than any sport I know. I've seen a comfortable situation change to a hopeless one in seconds and vice versa.
The final round of group games will be played simultaneously, btw. This is to avoid any team knowing ahead of time how the other game in the group finished and knowing exactly what they need to do.
This was prompted by the worst game in the history of the sport, Germany - Austria 1982, to which I alluded earlier. Algeria (who had shocked Germany in the opener) had finished their final game and Germany and Austria both knew that a 1 -0 German victory would be enough to see both teams through to the next round when they played. After Germany took a 1-0 lead, both teams just kicked the ball around for 70 minutes without even attempting to disguise what they were doing. I remember turning off the TV in disgust.
We could be in for a scenario exactly like that on Thursday, of course. I'm not saying it will happen, but with the US having a German manager with excellent connections in the German camp....
redqueen
(115,103 posts)Seriously now that wouldn't happen. I can see both managers being conservative because they both know what they need to do, but that kind of nonsense just won't happen.
Oops and also thank you for the breakdown.
BainsBane
(53,029 posts)And I must say I can't help thinking of Germany and Austria's past alliance.
Will Altidore be able to play in the next game?

(6,261 posts)A hamstring injury usually takes 6-8 weeks to recover. He knew it, that's why he took it so hard.
BainsBane
(53,029 posts)not because the other player did anything. Did I miss something?
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)It's all the sudden twist and turns. Whenever you see a player suddenly collapse with nobody near him, it's very often a hamstring injury.
There's nothing you can do about it. It just takes time to heal, and you don't want to re-injure it by coming back too soon, because that will really aggravate it.

(6,261 posts)A draw would give them 5 points, while Portugal and Ghana can only get 4 max.
Doable, I think. Both sides will be happy with a draw.

(10,575 posts)If the United States ties Portugal, then either Ghana or Portugal could finish the group with a maximum of four points (those two countries meet June 26th). If the United States loses to Germany and also finishes with four points, then the Americans would have to rely on goal difference. As of right now, the U.S. have a +1 goal difference, two better than Ghanas -1 and five better than Portugals -4. Assuming the U.S. ties Portugal , the goal difference wouldnt change, so the U.S. would be hoping that Portugal beats Ghana by a small margin, while also not giving up too many goals to Germany.

(112,094 posts)Current standings:
Germany - 4 pts, +4 on goal differential
USA - 4 pts, +1 on GD
Ghana - 1 pt, -1 on GD
Portugal - 1 pt, -4 on GD
If the USA wins or draws with Germany, then we are in.
If USA loses and Ghana wins over Portugal, then we are in due to our victory in the game we played against them.
If USA loses and Portugal ties Ghana, then we are in.
If USA loses and Portugal wins over Ghana, then they would have to make up the five points in GD.
LittleBlue
(10,362 posts)In which case, it's a 2 goal margin and we're playing Germany
TexasTowelie
(112,094 posts)If the USA loses and there is a definitive winner in the Ghana/Portugal game then we would be tied with the winner with 4 points. It would then go to tiebreaker b. Overall, we are stronger in the tiebreakers against Portugal than against Ghana due to the big loss that Portugal had against Germany.
Tiebreakers
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches
b) goal difference in all group matches
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee
