This is rule number one. Responsible gun owners do not clean their guns, play with their guns or do anything else with them until they check them carefully.
I am fed up with the morons who 'accidentally' shoot someone or something because they either never learned this rule or ignore it. They should be charged with whatever statute is on the books that could apply. Ignorance is no excuse for this.

(17,111 posts)You are responsible for that gun once it's in your hands. Rule number one applies to any gun you have in your possession. You start from the beginning before doing anything with it.

(53,339 posts)A VN vet brother once took me to his basement to show me his gun collection. When he tried to hand me an AK-47 I wouldn't take it. I told him I was done with guns after Vietnam. The AK was the weapon that blew away half my teeth and jaw in the war and caused my 18-month hospitalization. And three jaw reconstructions.
No, thanks.

All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Jeff Cooper[2]
The NRA provides a similar set of rules:
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
The National Rifle Association, The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling[3]
The Canadian Firearms Program uses the concept of The Four Firearm ACTS:
Assume every firearm is loaded.
Control the muzzle direction at all times.
Trigger finger off trigger and out of trigger guard.
See that the firearm is unloaded. PROVE it safe.
