Bowe Bergdahl an outpatient at Texas military base

Bowe Bergdahl becomes an outpatient at Texas military base

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's long road to recovery took another step forward Sunday when military officials announced that the former prisoner-of-war had become an outpatient at the Texas military base where he is being treated.

Bergdahl, 28, had been receiving inpatient treatment at the Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Now, U.S. Army officials said, he is receiving outpatient care at the base.

"His reintegration process continues with exposure to more people and a gradual increase of social interactions," the Army said in a statement. "Debriefings and counseling from Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) psychologists continue to ensure he progresses to the point where he can return to duty."

Bergdahl has been under the close care of military medical personnel since Taliban-allied forces released him May 31 after five years of captivity.

I can't believe it. I thought it was going to take months. He is getting better within weeks. Pretty amazing. From near death to on the right track in no time. Good for him.

He is not being exposed to all of the hate and vitriol about him and his parents emanating from Fox or from other sources questioning whether or not he was worth recovering from Taliban captivity

for anyone to live through his experiences and then come home to find people are going to be nasty to you and threaten you and your family for the rest of your life--let alone someone like him who appears to have had some mental illness going in to the army to begin with. The platoon mates who keep bizarrely going after him don't seem mentally stable themselves--or they're being paid by the RNC.

expose him to what happened following his release. At least the exposure will be done by professional mental health experts in a controlled setting - much better than having him turn on Fox News when he gets home.

For example, WWII POWs recovered faster and healthier than Vietnam POWs...

Bergdahl has faced an unprecedented amount of ""American" (cough) animosity which will certainly factor into his recovery. I hope he's still being shielded from the fall-out surrounding his return.
