Gov. Martin O'Malley - "Two Days in Iowa"

Go behind-the-scenes during Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley's June 20-21, 2014 trip to Iowa. Covers Senator Tom Harkin's Iowa Hall of Fame Dinner, the State Party Convention; a coordinated campaign kick-off in Polk County; and campaigning around the state with Iowa's next governor, Jack Hatch.

. . . campaign primping and fluff, but a good first glimpse at an interesting potential candidate for president.

However, he needs to stop the rain tax. It is terrible and we are the only state to have it. I don't think the country would want a federal rain tax. That is my only negative on a great Governor. He is going to run for President for sure. We have the best schools in the country.

Yeah, rain tax might be goofy, but its intent is to reduce runoff and pollution from destroying the Bay. At least it is something.

We give a lot of money to the Bay already. Do you hear California having a rain tax on the Bay? Your arrogance is not funny. Asking why I don't like the Chesapeake Bay? Ridiculous!

I guess he doesn't pass the ideological purity test that apparently only Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren (for now) can pass.

For example you could disagree with him on one issue, but agree with him on many more. Therefore he is not necessarily evil incarnate.

But no, you live in Virginia. A low tax state and you ask me questions about my state? Plenty to question VA with, but I won't.

some of the best schools in the country
a low crime rate
a professional police department
one of the top fire departments in the world
an awesome library system
cool parks

If they wanted to give me a slight tax increase to help the bay, I'd say ok.

Huh! You would have to double before you are close to Maryland. And the rain tax will average 4K a year. Thanks for your concern from Virginia though. We in Maryland appreciate your concern.

cost:

"fees would also be imposed on individual homes and driveways–with the highest in Baltimore City–$48 to $144 a year depending on the home’s and driveway’s size–and $72 per every 1,050 square feet of hard surface on businesses, private schools and nonprofits."

I guess you really meant .04K

He is running tomorrow and he is a Democrat. Besides even reading this. I live in Anne Arundel County in Arnold, Maryland. The house is 2800 square feet which is average, but I have two acres which is also going to be added to the total rain tax. To be honest, I would rather they just raise the property taxes than have a separate tax on to everything. I thought paying 7500 a year in property taxes was awful until I spoke to some of my friends from high school at the reunion about the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania where they are paying 12000 a years in property taxes. I haven't much complained about my property taxes since. lol.

impervious = not permitting penetration or passage; impenetrable

Your lawn is pervious. Your roof drains onto the lawn. Only the rain hitting your driveway goes into the storm system.

It'll only add $50 to your bill and will greatly improve the state's storm water system. With the increase in torrential storms and rains, this needs to be done anyway. Be thankful that you live in a state where improvements are done in advance.

Though I must admit, I didn't know about the reasons for the rain tax.

It is good to know, and at times some laws, you really don't know what the underlying reason is for.

I also really like the idea of a president who started in the city council. The fact that his parents met at Democratic headquarters is pretty cheesy, but also kind of cool.
