Clintons' CGI America opens with big money goals, guest list

The Clinton Global Initiative's domestic spin-off, CGI America, is no normal convention. This week, as Denver plays host to 1,000-plus bigwigs — many prepared to commit money to address social and economic problems — the political world is watching.

Tuesday morning, the opening ballroom session is set to include a taping of NBC's "Meet the Press" with Bill Clinton and host David Gregory about America's economic future. It will air Sunday morning.

The goal of the conference, as with its global counterpart, is to pin down commitments from its well-heeled and well-connected participants in the form of multi-year financial promises for programs aimed at solving problems.

Several new commitments will affect Denver and Colorado. The City of Denver on Wednesday will announce plans for an $8 million "social impact bond" to provide supportive housing for 200 chronically homeless people. Using that method, investors front the money and get repaid later by the city if the new program generates savings for agencies that deal with homelessness-related problems.
