Actor Gary Oldman takes on Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton in expletive-laced Playboy interview
BY HELENA ANDREWS June 24 at 1:06 PM
I just think political correctness is crap. Thats what I think about it. I think its like, take a f joke. Get over it.
Actor Gary Oldman, in just about the only quote we can actually publish from a recent interview with Playboy Magazine.
Speaking about the double standard he believes exists in Hollywood, Oldman, who stars in this summers Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, told the magazine that comedians and satirists like Jon Stewart and Bill Maher could get away with calling House minority leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a fing useless c-.
Throughout the interview, the Oscar-nominated actor spouts myriad offensive and unprintable terms while maintaining, its not like Im a fascist or a racist. Theres nothing like that in my history.
On a potential Hillary Clinton run for president, Oldman, who describes himself as a libertarian, echoed the sentiments of his The Contender character, fictional Republican congressman Shelly Runyon, who slings mud at a female candidate for vice president played by actress Joan Allen.
He doesnt want Joan Allen to become president; he just believes she isnt the right person for the job, Oldman told Playboy. Its nothing to do with the fact that shes a woman, but he uses a bit of dirt on her to bring her down.
Hmmm, Could Oldman be gunning for a new gig in opposition research?

(1,307 posts)but unrealistic - Joan Allen's character is an atheist!
Gary Oldman is really showing his ass, isn't he?

(20,805 posts)....Oldman is one of a rare breed, a right-winger in Hollywood-land, and has done a very good job, up to this point, of keeping it mostly under wraps.
Not sure what set him off, but his under-belly appears to be truly unpleasant...a shame, because he is a very good actor..

(82,849 posts)Oldman's character in The Contender doesn't believe Joan Allen's character should be president, but there's not a whiff of sexism in any of it. Oldman's character just happens to latch on to an unfounded rumor that Allen's character is a slut, and uses that rumor to conclude that she's not qualified to be president, unlike divorcé and serial philanderer Ronald Reagan.
Jesus. Do these assholes even listen to themselves?

Hey Old Man, why don't you take a trip to DC and insult Pelosi to her face instead of hiding behind a paywalled magazine interview?

(115,085 posts)The notion that Playboy turns women into sex objects is ridiculous. Women are sex objects. If women werent sex objects, there wouldnt be another generation. Its the attraction between the sexes that makes the world go round. Thats why women wear lipstick and short skirts. - Hugh Hefner

But he's been living in the U.S. since sometime in the early 90s, so I guess he somehow feels entitled to expressing his opinion about our politicians. Too bad.
I'm saddened to see this, since I've long considered him one of the most brilliant actors ever.
This comes down to the longstanding dilemma of whether one can separate the personal character of the artist from his/her body of art. I think of Jon Voigt as a particularly salient example of this - I will always appreciate his indelible performance in "Midnight Cowboy" - and no amount of knowing that he's a thoroughly right wing nut job will ever change my appreciation of that.
And as someone who was involved in theater in my younger years, I came across more instances than I can count of actors who performed exquisitely in roles as upright, honorable, appealing characters who were absolute jerks when you got to know them in real life. Actors are chameleons, and so many of them can take on all sorts of personas without in the least being anything like those personas in their true selves.
So, I'm sorry to find out that Gary Oldman is apparently one of those jerks - but I can't be surprised by it. I'll still appreciate his brilliance as an actor.
Edited to fix a glaring error - I originally cited Nick Nolte instead of Jon Voigt as the star of Midnight Cowboy. My thanks to the poster below who pointed out my error!

(7,874 posts)That's okay, they look somewhat alike, but your point is about Voigt's political views and you are correct about him being a right-wing nut job.

(10,893 posts)red flags for me whenever I hear somebody whine about "political correctness". It gives me the impression that the person is mad that they can't say backwards-sounding stuff without being criticized for it.
