Letter Carriers Once Again Have Highly Successful Food Drive

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Community-Services/Letter-Carriers-Once-Again-Have-Highly-Successful-Food-Drive

06/23/2014Kenneth Quinnell

For the 11th consecutive year, the Letter Carriers' (NALC's) Food Drive collected more than 72 million pounds of food to help restock food banks, pantries and shelters around the country.

The annual food drive—the nation's largest—took place this year on Saturday, May 10, in more than 10,000 cities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. Postal customers across the country were asked to leave bags of non-perishable food next to their mailboxes so letter carriers could pick them up and deliver them to local food distribution charities.

Since the annual drive began in 1992, more than 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected and distributed by NALC and community supporters.

NALC President Fredric Rolando was proud of the work done by his organization's members:

This demonstrates the value of the unique postal network, which goes to 151 million addresses six days a week. It also shows the strong connection between letter carriers and the communities they serve—a bond that serves the nation well. Letter carriers see firsthand the needs in the communities where we work, and we’re honored to be able to help people in need by leading an effort that brings out the best in so many Americans.

so I donate cash. The local food bank claims they can multiply each dollar 15-17 times, depending on season, and I have no reason to doubt them.

What I'd be more likely to donate would be what I missed during my last bout with poverty, fruit. It would have to be canned fruit because they don't want perishables, and thus the hernia.

I'm hoping my money will extend to the occasional crate of apples.

the letter carriers may be the only person that they see each day. It's wonderful that they make such a contribution back to the communities they serve.

I noticed my local post office has a "Now Hiring" sign out front.
Does that mean they're union-busting?
