http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-rare-corpse-flower-bloom-costa-mesa-20140623-story.htmlThe payoff: A huge flower with an extremely pungent smell -- but it's a less-than-pleasant one.
---
The horticulture department doesn't know exactly when the corpse flower will open, but when it does, they'll have only a 24- to 48-hour window to pollinate it.
---
The plant has been on display since Thursday in anticipation of the bloom, and will remain so until it happens.
More at link.
The horticulture department will be open to the public until 6:00 pm Wednesday. (Probably the same on the following day(s) until the flower has fully opened.)
Edit to add image: Thanks to DUer, rocktivity, I was able to post this picture of the corpse flower that is actually blooming at Orange Coast College!
Thank you, rocktivity!!

(15,682 posts)since she gets so excited with the strange and bizarre.
I would enjoy seeing it myself - if I didn't have to smell it.

(12,209 posts)But I worked at Forest Lawn for 3 years (in my 20's) delivering flowers to crypts, niches and graves.
I'll pass on experiencing the flower's fragrance.
I heard about the flower every now and then when I lived in Pasadena, but I'd never seen it before: it's amazing looking.
