Conservative Columnist Earnestly Asks: 'Why Not The Washington Reagans?'

ERIC LACH – JUNE 25, 2014, 10:44 AM EDT

A columnist for The Washington Times has weighed in on the Washington Redskins' name. If the name must changed, the columnist says, go Gipper.

Last week, The United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled six of the Redskins' trademark registrations, ruling that the trademarks "were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered." The immediate practical effects of the move were minimal, but the announcement did bring national attention back to the battle surrounding the name.

In a column on Tuesday, Washington Times contributor Michael Taube wrote that because it was "clear some people are going to get constantly worked up about this issue," he had an "amusing suggestion" for Redskins owner Daniel Snyder: name the team after Ronald Reagan.

This wasn't an original thought. The idea was born, accoriding to TPM's exhaustive research, as a joke on Twitter, and Grover Norquist offered a joking endorsement to BuzzFeed last week. But Taube appears serious about it.

Michael Taube contributes to our national discourse much in the way toilet paper contributes to our sewage systems.

They'd slash their operating budget to the bone, while running up huge debts on the corporate card. They'd forget the play-signals at the snap. They'd sell the team playbook to their fiercest rival for $20 and a cooler of Gatorade. They'd formulate field strategy with astrology. Basically, they'd smile, big cheerful grins while the NFL came apart at the seams.

So, not a good idea.

If Ray Gun were such a "great" President...why are there thousands of wingnuts whose sole purpose in life is to name stuff after him?

Makes me think they are "ashamed" of him, and they think if you name enough stuff after someone, then everyone will assume he must have been great.

Reminds me of hearing back in the day how "Everyone listened to Rush Limbaugh", only to find out that "everyone" was a couple of million people who couldn't find anything else on their radio.

Since I already dislike their team, it would make it even more fun to root against them.

I still like "Washington Federals" so I could call them the fedskins....
